Consumer watchdog halts Biden-era Google Payment supervision, Google spokesperson says (Reuters) -The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has withdrawn its efforts to supervise Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Google Payment Corp, a spokesperson for Google said on Thursday, marking a reversal of a Biden-era decision to monitor the nonbank financial platform. The watchdog announced in December that it was ordering federal supervision of Alphabet’s payment arm, a decision the company immediately said it was challenging in court. Google will now drop its lawsuit since the CFPB has discontinued its supervision efforts, a spokesperson for the company said in an emailed statement. In December, the CFPB had announced the step, saying it had determined services offered by Google Payment had posed a risk to consumers. The supervision of Google Payment would be "an unwarranted use of the Bureau’s powers and resources," acting CFPB director Russell Vought, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, said in a May 7 memo, according to Bloomberg News, which first reported the developments. The CFPB did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Under Biden, the CFPB had been more closely scrutinizing the growing sector of financial services provided by Silicon Valley rather than traditional banks. In the lawsuit filed after the CFPB’s December announcement, Google Payment had said the regulator had relied on a small number of unsubstantiated complaints concerning a product it no longer offered. "It didn’t make sense for the CFPB to supervise a product that never posed any risks and is no longer available in the U.S.," Google spokesperson José Castañeda said. The company had retired the U.S. version of the Google Pay "P2P" product in June 2024 for business reasons, long before the CFPB issued its designation, according to the spokesperson.

US consumer watchdog asks court to scrap medical debt regulation (Reuters) -The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has joined with industry groups in asking a federal court to scrap a Biden-era regulation barring consumer credit reports from including medical debt, according to court papers. In a motion submitted on Wednesday in a Texas federal court, the CFPB joined two industry groups representing banks, credit unions and credit bureaus in asking a judge to strike down the rule, saying the CFPB had exceeded its legal authority and violated laws governing the crafting of regulations. The rule is currently due to go into effect in June after the court issued a stay in February. If approved by a judge, the move would undo a major policy plank championed by former Vice President Kamala Harris. Officials in the prior administration said it would remove up to $49 billion in medical debts from the credit reports of 15 million Americans. In the United States, patients seeking medical treatment sometimes borrow to cover the cost because they either lack insurance or their plans require them to pay part of the cost. Representatives for the CFPB, the Cornerstone Credit Union League and Consumer Data Industry Association, which had sued to block the rule, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. CFPB finalized the rule on January 7 when President Joe Biden was still in office. It was due to take effect 60 days later, after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Among other far-reaching changes, Trump has worked to reverse much of the Biden administration’s marquee consumer safeguards. Prior CFPB leadership said research showed medical debts, which patients do not incur out of choice, were poor indicators of borrowers’ ability to repay but could hinder consumers from accessing loans for cars, homes and small businesses. However, the industry groups said the evidence did not support the CFPB’s decision, and the ban could leave them blind to important information about borrowers.

Consumer watchdog lifts Well Fargo consent order in regulatory relief for lender (Reuters) -The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has lifted a 2018 consent order related to Wells Fargo’s compliance risk management, the bank said on Monday, signaling progress in resolving the lender’s outstanding regulatory issues. This was the sixth consent order for the bank that regulators have closed in 2025, Wells said. "Today’s termination, along with the recent closure of other consent orders, demonstrates that we have completed much of our common risk and control infrastructure work," Wells CEO Charlie Scharf said. In 2018, the bank entered into consent orders, or enforcement actions involving a fine or specific directive to address an issue, with the CFPB and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to address issues in its compliance risk management program. Wells Fargo’s regulatory issues came under the spotlight after a fake accounts scandal that erupted in 2016. Fixing those problems has been the top priority for the bank under Scharf, who became the CEO in 2019.
