I've seen several posts on here about Google using Gmail emails to train AI.
In this article, published today, Google state that "we do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini AI model.”

This is a $1.5 billion copyright settlement for the use of pirated books to train an AI model.
If your book is included in the list that can be searched on this page – secure.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com/lookup – then you may be able to claim a share of it.

"Any enjoyment you might get from weird, funny AI slop tends to be undercut when you know that someone's hard work was stolen in order to create it."
John Oliver lays into AI slop.

I'd add cultural costs to the list in the last sentence, given Labour's proposed copyright exemption for generative AI.

I hope the UK Gov't are getting this message too!

The government's preferred proposal on #CopyrightAndAI will have a crippling effect on the UK's creative industries.
So, if you're NOT a creative, but you value the arts and like living in a country that has a healthy creative industry and can spare the time to object to this proposal, please do!
3️⃣ The cost of training AI is going down, but a recent copyright court case could increase costs. If ‘Thomson Reuters v Ross’ is followed by other courts then AI developers may have to start factoring in copyright fees.

“The gov't is suggesting a wholesale transfer of wealth from a hugely successful sector that invests hundreds of millions in the UK to a tech industry that extracts profit that is not assured and will accrue largely to the US and indeed China.”
Beeban Kidron on the gov't's #CopyrightAndAI proposal.
🚩The UK government's refusal to sign a pledge for an "open", "inclusive" and "ethical" approach to AI development will be a red flag to UK creatives already concerned by its proposed policy on #CopyrightAndAI.
🚩Siding with the Trump gov't on this is a second red flag.

While permitting AI to cannibalise the work of human creators may result in a short-term boost to the UK economy, its long-term economic implications will be catastrophic. As genuine human creativity is inevitably squeezed out of the creative sector, AI will increasingly be feeding off its own output, producing increasingly derivative, stale, soulless art which will be indistinguishable from the AI generated output produced by other countries. As a consequence, the UK will lose its creative edge and with it, its position as a world-leader in the creative industries.
I’ve just written to my MP regarding the government’s new proposal on Copyright and AI.
The government thinks the proposal will be good for the economy.
This is the argument I gave for why the long-term economic implications of the proposal will be catastrophic.
