Tough start for Beauties in CAF league Erasmus Shalihaxwe FNB Women’s Super League champions, Beauties Football Club, suffer their second defeat at the CAF Women’s Champions League in South Africa on Sunday. South African league winners Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies defeated the Namibian champions 7–0.  This came after their opening 3–0 defeat to Zambia’s Zesco Ndola Girls Football Club. Beauties, however, managed a 3–0 victory against Malawi’s Ntopwa Football Club over the past weekend. The Okahandja side is making its debut at the regional tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals. The team is banking on a mix of youth and experienced players to advance to the next stage. Speaking to COSAFA Media before the tournament, Beauties FC owner and co-coach Salome Iiyambo said her team was ready to face tough opponents. “It’s more than just a draw; it’s a real test of our strength, our character, and our ambition. We respect all our opponents; they each have a rich history, but we do not fear anyone. We might be debutants and considered underdogs, but we are ready to fight. Let the battle begin,” she said. Iiyambo said the squad blends players of different generations. “COSAFA allows us to bring 21 players, and in our squad we have both youth and experience,” she said.  “In fact, we have one of the oldest players in the Namibian league, over 40, who brings invaluable guidance on the field. At the other end, our youngest player is just 15 years old, with two or three others in that age range. We also have a few with international experience. Overall, it’s a team full of life, ready to fight and stand together.” Beauties FC interim head coach Leonard Nambandi,  who was recently appointed to guide the team through the tournament, said the group stage was challenging but the team had prepared well. “We are drawn in a difficult group, but we have done well in terms of preparation for tomorrow’s match. We will go out guns blazing and give Zesco Ndola Girls a tough match. We have analysed their previous matches and if we stick to the game plan, we can do well in our opening match,” he said. The COSAFA qualifiers continue this week.  The semi-finals are scheduled for 29 August, with the Group B winner facing the Group C winner at midday. Group A’s winner will meet the best runner-up later that afternoon.  The final will be played on 31 August to determine COSAFA’s representative at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

COSAFA course sharpens Namibia’s football admin team Erasmus Shaliahxwe The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), in partnership with the Namibia Football Association (NFA), has trained 30 football officials through a week-long administration and management course held in Windhoek. The NFA confirmed over the weekend that the participants included members from its regional associations and staff from the secretariat.  The five-day course was facilitated by Ashford Mamelodi, a former FIFA development officer and a seasoned instructor accredited by both FIFA and CAF. NFA interim secretary general Cassius Moetie said the training was crucial for football personnel involved in the daily operations of football in Namibia.  “This COSAFA administration and management course for NFA staff, including our regional coordinators, is long overdue,” he said. Moetie praised Mamelodi for his honest and detailed delivery on football development and administration.  “Ashford Mamelodi was brutally honest in terms of football development, administratively and from managing football from grassroots, academies, third, second and nationwide first divisions up to the top-tier leagues and national teams,” he said. He described Mamelodi as a vital figure in African football.  “Ntate Mamelodi is an absolute fine product of African football development, and I am inclined to believe that Southern Africa does not exploit his expertise and exposure enough to improve governance, administration and the operations at member association level,” said Moetie. He added that COSAFA has also facilitated courses for referees and a strategic leadership workshop for NFA executive council members.  Local under-15 teams also benefited from the Fast Footie Programme, held as part of the U20 COSAFA Championship Tournament’s legacy activities.

U20 girls ready for tough COSAFA battle Erasmus Shalihaxwe The under-20 women’s national team is aiming to take full advantage of playing at home during this year’s COSAFA U20 Championship.  The tournament will be held in Windhoek from 4 to 13 July 2025, as part of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games. Namibia missed out on last year’s edition in November but returns with renewed focus.  They are placed in Group A alongside Mozambique, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Assistant coach Errol Damaseb said the group phase will be challenging, but the team is determined to advance. “The group stage will not be easy, but we are determined to ensure that we make it through the group stage. The team looks good. We have a few players who played in the COSAFA U17 Girls Championship in May. They understand the pressure that comes with playing international games,” said Damaseb. Women’s football in Namibia is growing, with more young girls playing competitively and joining national teams.  Nancy Lebang, who was the top goal scorer at the recent COSAFA U17 Girls Championship, is part of the squad. Other notable players include Nanami Uarije, Debora Vries, Grace Eises, Joy Goses, and Renald Damara.  All five participated in the CAF U15 Schools Tournament last year in Walvis Bay and featured again in the U17 team this May. The full squad includes: Tunga Ndiweteko, Florence Mwalundange, Unondjamo Kaetjavi, Kuhatjiua Tjapaka, Ontheeditse Tokwane, Unice Mafuta, Tuuliki Shiimi, Shiwovanhu Haukongo, Cherifa Cody Garoes, Meriam Michael, Nancy Lebang, Gudness Garises, Senoritha Aochamus, Sheida Job, Joy Goses, Nanami Uarije, Grace Eises, Renalda Hangula, Debora Vries, Lydia Simuma, and Julitta Berndt.

Zimmer names final COSAFA U20 squad Erasmus Shalihaxwe The U20 men’s national soccer team’s head coach Jerimi Zimmer and his assistant Uerikondjera Kasaona have named the final squad ahead of the 2025 COSAFA Under-20 Championship. The team reported for camp on Thursday and will be based at the NFA Technical Centre in Windhoek. Zimmer said the tournament is a crucial stepping stone for young players aiming to join the Brave Warriors or sign for Premier League clubs.  He explained that most players in camp are active in the MTC HopSol Youth League, so the focus will be on tactical work rather than fitness. “Most of the players in camp are currently playing in the MTC HopSol Youth League, and the league is still active, meaning the focus will be more on the tactical aspects and little on fitness. We want the players to understand our methodology. We will try out a few combinations with a few scheduled practice matches and will have daily training and video sessions with the players for them to understand what we expect from them,” said Zimmer. Zimmer served as assistant coach to James Britz when Namibia reached the COSAFA U20 final in 2020, losing 1-0 to Mozambique in Port Elizabeth.  That squad later made a historic appearance at the U20 TotalEnergies AFCON. “I am looking forward to my first official international match as coach of the Young Warriors, and I believe that the crop of talent we have will make my job much easier,” he said. The final squad includes: Ganeb Rodriques Andreas Gegu, Kavendjii Mcheni, Honesly Hero, Smith Mauricio Given, Guiseb Antonius Tino, Haitamba Promise, Hakushika Leopold Panduleni Iyaloo, Bell Everett Carl, Malgas Mpumelelo Damion, Timotheus Onesmus Hafyenanye, Sakues Lukas Mandjoro, Tjipuka Muhupua, Awaseb Fabiano Ewald, Deckenbrock Nicolas Claus, Nasima Vygotsky, Van Wyk Robinho Tiro, Brünzel Vitario Leonard Riki, Kauzuu Suveree Martino Selwyn, Gawab Andriano, Naobeb Rashid Simon Alfred, and Kandjou Ronald Junior Vimanuka.

Depu makes history as Angola defeat Lesotho  Angola’s Depu moved joint top of the all-time scorers list in the Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup as he netted a hat-trick to help Palancas Negras to a 4-0 victory over Lesotho in their Group B clash at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Mangaung | Bloemfontein on Sunday. Namibia and Malawi played to a goalless draw in the other fixture in the pool, which means defending champions Angola top the group with four points, followed by Lesotho (3 points), Namibia (2) and Malawi (1). It will be all to play for in the final round of fixtures on Tuesday, when Angola take on Malawi and Lesotho meet Namibia. Angola secured the biggest win of the competition to date when they defeated Lesotho, with much of the damage done in the first half. Vidinho put the side ahead with a header from a corner on 42 minutes later, and shortly afterwards it was 2-0 when Depu headed in from a cross by Milson. Angola then added a third shortly after the break as Depu netted his second with another header to make sure of the points. But he was not done yet and a delightful chip from Manuel’s pass saw him complete his hat-trick, and score his fourth of the competition. Depu was the Golden Boot recipient as Angola lifted the trophy in 2024 with five goals in the competition. Add to that his four goals this term and his career tally is nine, matching the all-time Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup record holder Felix Badenhorst of Eswatini, who also has nine goals. Chikumbutso Salima of Malawi challenged by Moses Shidolo of Namibia during the 2025 HollywoodBets Cosafa Cup match between Namibia and Malawi at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, Bloemfontein on the 08 June 2025. BackpagePix Namibia and Malawi could not be separated in the other game in the pool, with The Flames managing eight attempts at goal to the Brave Warriors’ three. The action continues on Monday when Madagascar will seek to earn a semi-final place with a victory over Eswatini in the three-team Group C (15h00 CAT / 13h00 GMT). They opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Tanzania, and another three points will give them an unassailable lead in the pool. Only the top team in each group advances to the semi-finals. Madagascar and Eswatini have met five times before and the island nation are still seeking their first win. Eswatini have claimed three victories to go with two draws. Comoros also opened with a win in Group D when they beat record seven-time winners Zambia 1-0 in their first fixture. Next up is Botswana (18h00; 16h00 GMT) and they are in the same boat as the Malagasy, where another three points will see them advance. Comoros will hope for a first win against Botswana, having a defeat and a draw against them in the past. They are yet to score a goal. – cosafa.com The post Depu makes history as Angola defeat Lesotho  appeared first on The Namibian.
