We tend to think of grassland as “open”, but it has a canopy which is also seasonal.
Cowslip (Primula veris) peaks before the sward closes, much as Primrose (Primula vulgaris) does before woodland leaf-out.

The strategy is to beat the canopy.

Cowslips are rare here, so if I'd completed the #CowslipChallenge you could have knocked me down with a - well, a Greater Stitchwort!(Stellaria holostea)

Strange weekend away from home, on the receiving end of the pace egg play, finishing some work, and a whole thing with a dead pipit, but as soon as I arrived at the holiday let on Friday, I saw a patch for #cowslipchallenge + roared yersssssssse! to myself. I even shook a fist in the air!

Some of the offspring of my wild-collected Primula veris, Cowslip, have been heavily fasciated. The cause unknown, since I never use herbicide, which is one of the common causes of fasciation.
