Quota dispute dampens spirit of Crayfish Festival Hertta-Maria Amutenja The Lüderitz Crayfish Festival is facing tensions behind the scenes as the Crayfish Festival Trust is accusing the Lüderitz Town Council of withholding vital fishing quota funds. The Trust claims this has disrupted the festival’s preparations and operations. The 18th edition of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival began on Tuesday and will run until Monday, 5 May. The event, under the theme “Safeguarding our Ocean Riches”, celebrates the town’s maritime culture and features seafood dishes. But the Crayfish Festival Trust and the Town Council are at odds over financial matters, with both sides accusing the other of failing in their duties. The Trust issued a statement saying, “Despite our efforts to cooperate and fulfil the conditions set by the Council, the funds have still not been disbursed. The Trust views this as a deliberate attempt to undermine the success of the Festival and its objectives.” The Trust added that it had complied with all requests for financial reporting and governance documentation.  “We remain committed to transparency and accountability, yet the Council continues to create obstacles,” the statement said. In response to the ongoing dispute, the Trust appealed to the community for patience.  “We call on the community and stakeholders to remain calm and continue supporting the Crayfish Festival. We believe that unity and dialogue will prevail over division,” it stated. Lüderitz mayor and festival trustee, Phil Balhao, addressed the issue on Facebook, confirming he had been removed from all official festival programmes. “I have been instructed by the chairperson of the Crayfish Festival Board of Trustees, Alex Gawanab, that I have been removed from all programmes for this year’s event,” he said. Balhao claimed the dispute centres on unresolved financial audits and transparency issues. “The Lüderitz Town Council, as the custodian of the Crayfish Festival, has been deadlocked in an ongoing dispute regarding the validity and financial accounting of previous festivals,” he wrote. Balhao explained that the Council’s decision to withhold the funds stems from pending issues that need resolution.  “This has led to the Council withholding the transfer of funds to the Board until these pending matters have been resolved and overcome with a clear way forward,” he added. Balhao also mentioned that three councillors are facing legal threats, but emphasised that the Council is open to finding a long-term solution.  “We actually welcome finding a final and lasting solution through any means, as long as there is no more confusion moving forward in the years to come,” he wrote. In his post, Balhao criticised the Trust’s version of events and announced that a public meeting will be held soon to address the matter.  “We will have a public meeting soon to share our motivation with our community within the coming month. Then you can make your minds up,” he wrote. Balhao later clarified in response to questions that he is not involved in this year’s festival and was only briefly involved last year. He said that, according to the Trust Deed document, the chairperson of the council is the ex-officio chairperson of the Crayfish Festival Board of Trustees, but that role has been held by Gawanab since last year. He also confirmed that he was informed of his removal via a WhatsApp message from Gawanab following his appearance on Good Morning Namibia. Efforts to reach Gawanab for further comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

Lüderitz mayor removed from crayfish activities Lüderitz mayor, Phil Balhao says he has been instructed by crayfish festival board of trustees chairperson Alex Gawanab that he has been removed from all programmes for this year’s event. Balhao on Facebook says “the Lüderitz Town council, as the custodian of the crayfish festival, has been deadlocked in an ongoing dispute regarding the validity and financial accounting of previous festivals”. “As this fiduciary duty and due diligence is the combined responsibility of the council, this has led to the council withholding the transfer of funds to the board until these pending matters have been resolved and overcome with a clear way forward,” he adds. Balhao mentions in his statement that three councillors are allegedly being threatened with legal action. “The council has sought legal advice and this has further strengthened the resolve of the council to address these long standing issues once and for all,” says Balhao. “It’s due to this ongoing dispute that ‘the board have reserved their right’ to bar me from this year’s programme”. Gawanab told The Namibian he first has to consult with the board before he can comment on the matter. “I have no comments at this time.” The post Lüderitz mayor removed from crayfish activities appeared first on The Namibian.

Okahandja activists clash with mayor over crayfish fest attendance Okahandja activist Gerub Gaseb has crossed swords with mayor Beatrix Kotungondo over a decision to send two councillors to Lüderitz for the crayfish festival. Gaseb wants all councillors to stay at the town and be part of the ongoing mourning process in light of the murders of three young girls recently. Two councillors have so far been cleared to attend the festival – Landless People’s Movement councillor and former mayor Natasha Brinkmann and Independent Patriot for Change deputy mayor Akser Aupindi. This according to Kotungondo. However, Gaseb says four councillors have been allowed to attend the festival. “I decided that I will not be going, but only the deputy mayor and councillor Brinkmann. If they (activists) are talking about anything else, I do not know what they are talking about. When we have our event, I will invite Lüderitz. Yes, we are in mourning, but why should the other councillors not go?” Kotungondo says. However, Gaseb, who co-organised a child safety protest this week where a petition was handed over to deputy minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts, and culture Dino Ballotti, has vowed to stop the trip. “We have finished handing over the petition and now the town council wants to travel to Lüderitz for the crayfish festival. I spoke with the mayor and I said I am not going to allow that. We are mourning here. She also wanted to travel, initially, but she has sent her deputy. If the expo had continued today, would they have travelled?” he asks. In the meantime, Brinkmann has confirmed that she was already on her way to Lüderitz, but she took time to attend the memorials of the three murdered children. “I was already at the memorial today and I am on my way to Lüderitz. It was already decided, the office already assigned me to go,” says Brinkmann. The post Okahandja activists clash with mayor over crayfish fest attendance appeared first on The Namibian.

Namport and Nedbank partner to host cycling event at Crayfish Festival Niël Terblanché A new addition to Namibia’s sporting calendar has been unveiled, with the official launch of the Namport Nedbank PH Challenge, in collaboration with the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival. The event, which aims to promote cycling and wellness, was announced in Lüderitz earlier in March, where stakeholders gathered to endorse the inaugural challenge. The initiative is a joint effort by Namport, Nedbank Namibia, and the Powerhouse Cycling Club. It will be held in Lüderitz from 2 to 3 May 2025 and in Walvis Bay from 1 to 2 November 2025. The event will feature mountain bike and road races, as well as running events to include non-cycling participants. The cycling races will be sanctioned by the Namibian Cycling Federation, and distances include 56km for mountain bikers and 50km and 100km for road cyclists. Running enthusiasts will have the option to participate in 5km, 10km, or 21km races. Namport’s Manager for Marketing and Stakeholder Engagement, Cliff Shikuambi, said the challenge reflects a shared vision among partners. “This event is not merely a collaboration between our organisations; it represents a shared vision for fostering community engagement and promoting healthy lifestyles across Namibia,” he said. He added that Namport’s support will be renewed annually for the next three years. Joao da Costa, representing the Powerhouse Cycling Club, welcomed the collaboration. “As a club, we are excited and privileged to have partnered with Namport, Nedbank Namibia, and the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust.” He added that the event would help the club meet its goals of growing cycling participation throughout Namibia. The chairperson of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust, Clive Gawanab, described the collaboration as the realisation of a long-considered idea. “We have been considering incorporating a cycling event in the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival for quite a while, and seeing this vision come to fruition is quite pleasing,” he said. Nedbank Namibia Managing Director Martha Murorua pointed to the bank’s historical connection to Lüderitz. “Nedbank Namibia opened its second branch here in Lüderitz back in May 1973, and we have been part of this community ever since,” she said. The mayor of Lüderitz, Phillippus Balhao, called on residents to support the event through volunteering, adding that it aims to create a memorable experience for participants and spectators alike.
