The Speculum. A JOURNAL OF THE MELBOURNE MEDICAL STUDENTS SOCIETY. No. 34- MAY, 1896. PRICE, 1/- Women as Residents. It is too late in the day to affirm or deny the advisability of admitting women to the practice of medicine, but it is not too late to protest against their elevation to places they cannot well fill. Their admission to the profession is sanctioned by widely established precedent, and still leaves the public free to accept or reject their medical advice; but their establishment as Hospital Residents is a step decidedly more serious. When women first invaded the province of medicine, the universal defence of the movement was their superior capability of treating their own sex, it being urged that many women were prevented by natural modesty from consulting a male doctor. That such women exist in any considerable numbers is doubtful, but in the near future a reliable criterion will be found in the amount of professional success and extent of practice gained by women practitioners. However this may be, the movement is still in the experimental stage, and we contend that our Central Hospital should have taken no part in the experiment, at all events it would have been advantageous for its committee to note the experience of such institutions as have made the trial, and that of the Women's Hospital should at least have taught them to hasten slowly. In this Hospital the committee rejected a female candidate last year, at a time when one of the Resident Staff had to do double duty, and whilst advertisements for a medical man were circulated far and wide. We hear much of the argument that women should be treated only by women, but here a com-mittee of women (experientia doctae) abandon that view, even though the staff be below strength and overworked. Either they are incapable of judgment, or the woman resident, weighed in the balance, has been found wanting; and we incline to the latter.
