Post image Week 3, Critical Baking – Reflections on Sousanis and Helms:

Salted Caramel Hot Fudge Sequential Brownies

Long ago, I was gifted a brownie pan from one of those MLM schemes which advertises itself as making “perfect square” brownies. I find this to be an interesting idea, as in the time I’ve had it since an overwhelming majority of my baked good audience has informed me that to them, the “perfect” brownie is not a square with perfect, crunchy edges, but rather, a moist center piece. As we think about Comics in Critical M(B)aking this week, Sousanis and Helms have me thinking about the affordances of the comic “square” in sequential arts and the sort of intertextuality that occurs between the lines and gutters of the comic itself. As such, I present you with brownie “squares” decorated with “lines” of Ghirardelli Hot Fudge Sauce and Salted Caramel Sauce.

I also present muffins (mixed berry, double chocolate, chocolate chip) because I wanted to make muffins.

This week in @anasalter.bsky.social's Critical Making course, we're looking at comics as a form of making. In addition to reading @nsousanis.bsky.social's Unflattening and Jason Helms' Rhizcomics (name misspelled here, apologies), I decided to bake and share some sequential arts. #CriticalBaking
