Tears For Crocodilia, by
Zach Fitzner.
Highly recommend if you’re interested at all in alligators, crocodiles, their evolutionary history, roll in cultures both modern and ancient, and conservation.
Well researched, witty, funny. An overall good read.

A size comparison between a human and Orientalosuchus naduongensis. Orientalosuchus is shown with a long tail, for relatively short legs and a short and rounded snout. It is shown as somewhere around 1.7 to 1.8 meters long. A map on the side shows where it was found in Vietnam.

A skull reconstruction of Orientalosuchus naduongensis with a 3cm scalebar. It has a short and rather wide snout with large eyes and prominent crests that run between the opening of the nares and the eyes.

Jiangxisuchus nankangensis compared in size to Steve Irwin. It has four short legs and a long tail and measures around 1.4 to 1.5 meter in length. A map shows were the fossil was found in south eastern china and text gives information to the origins (Nanxiong/Hekou Formation, which corresponds to the Maastrichtian) and its phylogeny (Orientalosuchina, possibly within Alligatoroidea)

A skull reconstruction of Jiangxisuchus. It had large eyes and a medium-broad rounded snout. Overall the skull appears broadly triangular. Small bones are located above the eyesockets.

Another orientalosuchin pretty much done. Last time I had Dongnanosuchus, this time its Jiangxisuchus from the Cretaceous fo China. The stratigraphy has been kind of a headache ngl but the skull, ignoring some crushing, was wonderfully complete.

Lately I've been more focused on sculpting than 2D , but I felt like doing something fast to keep practice going.
A Mekosuchinae indet. inspired by the latest study on its presence in Papua New Guinea.
I really need to refocus on painting man.

To illustrate the difference better, here's the two named Golden Valley crocodilians next to each other. In life they'd be joined by at least two more, Another small animal related to Ahdeskatanka and a generalist crocodyloid, perhaps related to the widespread Borealosuchus.

Named only a few weeks ago, Ahdeskatanka is a basal alligatorine from North Dakota's Golden Valley Formation.
Like so many basal alligators, it was small in size and had teeth better suited for crushing small prey than what is seen in modern forms

Everyone talks how everything evolved into crocodile. No one talks how crocodile evolved into everything. Like thalattosuchians, Thalattosuchus here, for example. They just want to be ichthyosaur mimic.
