Saw this bottle covered with gooseneck barnacles on the beach. It’s a Chinese brand and I didn’t see any Japanese text on the label. Can’t help wondering if it drifted here from China…It’s the west coast of #Okinawa so it sounds plausible.
(This post also makes up for my missed #Crustmas)

As we bid adieu to 2025, and with it #Crustmas and #InverteFest, I leave you with the hope that you too may stand jauntily athwart what might otherwise devour you, or swim carefree through the threats surrounding, confident in your partnerships and resilience.

I believe this is photographic proof that Spicomellus (an extremely spiky early thyreophoran that made headlines this year) was an attempt at carcinization. 🦀

Of course, it could also demonstrate crabs exploring dinosaur morphospace.

Patiently awaiting the New Year and a rising tide that will sustain us all, it's a diverse assemblage of barnacles for #Crustmas.

Happy #InverteFest!

Metasequoia was my first fossil, dug out from the John Day Formation of central Oregon while doing the summer field camp thing with OMSI's Hancock Field Station. Dad got in the habit of growing 'living fossils' including cycads as well.

Technically the insects here count towards #Crustmas

Merry #crustmas !

Here’s my last parasitic crustacean of the holiday season. Ommatokoita elongata is a copepod that attaches to the eyes of Greenland sharks. Though this usually blinds the shark, it doesn’t seem to harm it much since they live in deep, murky water where sight isn’t that useful.

Three life stages of the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). At top is a mature female, trailed by two long, thin, pale egg strings. Its cephalothorax (to the right) is brown and patterned, while its genital segment (between the cephalothorax and the egg strings) is a darker reddish-brown. Below this female is another adult female, but without egg strings. It is similar in appearance to the female above it. At the bottom is an immature sea louse, smaller than the other two and with a much smaller genital segment, but otherwise similar in color. They are all against a white background.

On this day of #Crustmas and #InverteFest, we're inviting you to learn about the strange and specialized crustacean parasites out there! Some will be instantly recognizable, but others are so specialized to parasitism that they don't resemble their free-living relatives in the slightest!

It all started when a bunch of hermit crabs grouped up and gave their old shells to smaller crabs. Now once every year crabs get together and give gifts to each other, they even have their own mascot, Santa Claws 🦀
