Goose barnacles, also called percebes, turtle-claw barnacles, stalked barnacles, gooseneck barnacles, are filter-feeding crustaceans that live attached to hard surfaces of rocks and flotsam in the ocean intertidal zone. They require moving water to survive.

Pollicipes polymerus is a hermaphrodite. Reproduction takes place during the summer and there may be several broods per year. The ovaries are in the upper part of the peduncle and liberate from 104,000 to 240,000 eggs at a time into the mantle cavity. Here they stick together to form egg masses.

High in the moss-laden branches of Rotorua’s beech forests, a secret gathering unfolds—a tea party unlike any other, hosted by the playful and intelligent kea. Their emerald feathers glisten with hints of gold and deep orange as they perch among twisting vines and gnarled branches, surrounded by an array of antique keys swaying gently in the misty breeze. One kea clutches a delicate brass key in its beak, inspecting its intricate filigree with a knowing glint in its eye, while another tugs at a silver chain, making the keys chime softly like wind chimes of forgotten secrets. Beneath them, a trio of kea gather around an ornate porcelain tea set, steam curling from delicate cups as they peck curiously at sugar cubes and tiny biscuits. One mischievous kea dangles upside down, its claws wrapped around a branch as it snatches a key with playful determination. The hanging keys catch the filtered light, shimmering like lost relics, while tiny glowing wētā lanterns dangle nearby, casting a warm, enchanted glow over the whimsical scene.
