🥴 #Coal in a climate crisis is a stupid idea. More extreme weather events like #CycloneTam, more carbon emissions & a refusal to end our reliance on #fossilfuels

Title: " people weathering cyclone Tam to protect Denniston plateau"

Photo: Three people digging small drainage ditches in gravels during cyclone Tam. You can see three tents and a forested hill behind them. They are wearing wet weather gear. It is raining.

Text: "A tropical cyclone isn’t deterring concerned kiwis from camping out in the mountains on Denniston Plateau to protect it from being turned into an open-cast coal mine. This single mine would emit carbon pollution on a scale that would rival all of New Zealand’s annual emissions, drilling holes in the only climate lifeboat we have and making events like Cyclone Tam (and worse) commonplace.

Their message is clear - hell or high water (literally) we are not going anywhere until this special place is protected."

⛈️ #CycloneTam won't stop us from camping at #DennistonPlateau to protect it from being turned into a #coal mine by Bathurst Resources.

No more coal in a #climatecrisis

When you see the satellite images of the wind gust of #CycloneTam, no wonder the North Island of #NewZealand is getting hit hard. If you live in the North Island, stay safe, dry, and warm! #NZWrites

Fortunately I was in an Airbnb - so dry and warm. Probably would have been ok sleeping in my car, but glad I wasn't in a tent or high sided motorhome. It's a bit blowy! #CycloneTam

Cyclone Tam live: Tens of thousands without power, heavy rain in Northland Roofs have been torn off, trees and powerlines are down, and nearly 100 emergency calls have been made as heavy wind and rain lash the north.

Cyclone Tam is here. If you can, stay home. Check on your neighbours, kaumātua, your tamariki & fur babies too. Charge your phone, fill the kettle, be safe. Aotearoa knows how to manaaki in a storm. Look after each other.
