Peatlands are under pressure due to ongoing degradation, pushing the global biome from net sink to source. At #DBG2025 in Tübingen, we demonstrated how vegetation shifts affect carbon fluxes of a mountain peatland and outlined methods to downscale ecosystem methane fluxes to the plant-species scale.
Used the opportunity of #DBG2025 for the first in-person meeting with @diegomiga.bsky.social @unituebingen.bsky.social. From an excellent presentation in the #GBI group up to evenings with (nearly) uruguayan barbacues: all centered around Diego inspiring us for the secrets of his managed grasslands!
What a crazy week: While Ronja Ratzbor introduced TERRA at the @unituebingen.bsky.social PostDoc days, Olaf Cirpka went to the #Geo4Göttingen @uni-goettingen.de, and Kira Rehfeld & @michaeladippold.bsky.social introduced TERRA to the @soilsdbg.bsky.social at the #DBG2025. Tasks perfectly shared 👍
📢 #DBG2025 wrapped up with inspiring soil excursions around Tübingen
🌱The golden “Bohrstock” passed from @michaeladippold.bsky.social & @peterkuehn37.bsky.social to Georg Guggenberger to Uni Hannover — see you all at #DBG2027 and later at #DBG2029 in Bayreuth hosted by Eva Lehndorf and a team! 💚

The @unituebingen.bsky.social orga team of the #DBG2025, Thomas, Yvonne, @peterkuehn37.bsky.social, Callum, Harald & myself, say Bye to all participants: We enjoyed hosting you and hope the meeting was memorable. Looking forward to seeing many at the 100-year-event of the @soilsdbg.bsky.social again
Today wraps up our week at #DBG2025!
Stagnosol with organic surface layer and an iron pan
Stagnosol with thick organic surface layer
Mountain peatland, dominated by grasses in the black forest mountains
Sphagnum mosses
Very interesting 2-day excursion through the Black Forest during the #DBG2025, seeing some Stagnosols and mountain peatlands.
It was fun presenting a poster on #veganic #agroecology & chairing a session on #OrganicMatter in agricultural #soils at the #DBG2025 conference this week in Tübingen. Looking forward to the excursion tomorrow, before our #BaySISS summer school on #StableIsotopes starts @bayceer.bsky.social.
On time with the end of our #DFG funded project on the impact of #biochar in #soils, we could present our major outcomes: @iraloginova.bsky.social gave an excellent talk on root-biochar interactions and Prashanth Prasanna closed #DBG2025 with the impact of #mucilage on biochar stability: congrats 👋
📢The #DBG2025 program has ended today, but some excursions to explore the soils in the Tübingen area will still be offered tomorrow🏞️.
We wish all participants a safe journey and a nice weekend! See you all next time at #DBG2027!
At #DBG2025, our #SPP2322 & #Storage projects target #bioenergetics in #soils: @lingling1000.bsky.social assessed C & energy use efficiencies, @nbilyera.bsky.social the metabolic costs of enzyme production, & Yang Ding the interrelation of grassland C & N input on microbial storage: Excellent Job👋
...and even more about #RootWayS project at the #DBG2025: Yijie Shi (Ada) & Henrik Füllgrabe presented on #microzymography and the subsoil labeling methods (or #Soils dating #CoverCrops ). Congrats to the two for wrapping up the outcomes of the first phase so nicely in their excellent presentations
📢#DBG news
Not only science, but art as well.
On Wednesday evening, a cultural highlight took place at #DBG2025 when artist Elke Lehmann opened her exhibition, "#lumbriwurm," showcasing the earthworm as an artistic motif.
Monday was our #GBI Poster-Party-Day at #DBG2025: 2 times #RootWayS (BMBF) project with Jiangyuzhuo Wang's #subsoil labeling and Yihan Pu's mesh tubes show #intercropping benefit. Yuxuan Zhang of #BNI-2030 (@bmleh.de) added #nitrification inhibition & Ningkang Sun #AMF driven P mobilization on top 👏
Very interesting discussions about soils again this evening during the second poster session. The winners of the Best Award Poster #DBG2025 in five other commissions received books on soils in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
🎉Congratulations to the winners!
Proud of my "root-&-rhizosphere" team at #DBG2025 on Tuesday: Nipuna Withanage reported from #RootWayS (#BMFTR), Moses Ngugi from the #TERRA pre-project on functions of biodiverse Kenyan grasslands & Rozy Munene + Manisha Koirala from the #MoreCropPerDrop project in sub-Saharan Africa. Great Job 👍

After a very productive second day of scientific talks and a festive event, the #DBG2025 attendees gathered at the NECKAWA restaurant on the Neckar river to continue their scientific discussions and celebrate the #DBG Medals and Awards🏆, and ... to experience the traditional Tübingen ‘Stocherkahn’.
During the festive #DBG2025 event, we had also two invited talks. Johannes Lehmann from Cornell University in the US spoke about #soils and climate change mitigation. Michaela Dippold and Kira Rehfeld presented the new #TERRA excellence cluster at the University of Tübingen, which focuses on #soil.
The festive event of #DBG2025 with exciting welcome speeches from the conference president, Thomas Scholten; vice rector UniTü Samuel Wagner; president of the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining of BW, Birgit Kimmig; Tübingen's mayor, Boris Palmer; and #DBG president, Daniela Sauer.
Christian Ahl gave a great talk this morning on the biography of Fritz Scheffer, who contributed to the #DBG in its early years.
🔊Stay tuned to find out who will receive a Scheffer Award this afternoon!

Great #DBG2025 so far!
Very well organized by @unituebingen.bsky.social
There is also quite a bit of peaty content, e.g. Sebastian‘s poster using #Moorbodenmonitoring data to derive sampling strategies for #paludiculture.
@soilsdbg.bsky.social
📜Very intensive and friendly #DBG discussions about the scientific findings during the first poster session today.
🔖Jury had a hard time selecting the best posters from so many great contributions.
🏆The winners of the Best Poster Award #DBG2025 received Atlas of soils.
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
📢The start of the #DBG2025 oral sessions this morning and the first coffee break to discuss the latest research findings!
Many people interested in soils have already joined the sessions 👍
📜Posters are available for viewing at any time and will be presented today evening and on Wednesday.
Awesome weekend in the Black Forest looking at soil profiles with the legendary Karl Stahr. Tomorrow: #DBG2025
Love of soil goes through the stomach, too!
Welcome food, drinks and second #DBG2025 Soil Profile Cake Contest at the Icebreaker party at GUZ @unituebingen.bsky.social #GesundeBödenKlimaschutz #HealthySoilsClimateProtection #DBG2025
📢 Day two of the #DBG2025 excursions. Thomas Scholten and his Ph.D. student Hadi organized the groups' departure: 1) Intensive Forest Monitoring program, Black Forest, 2) Land-Atmosphere Feedback Observatory, Uni of Hohenheim.
☔ New discoveries in the rainy morning.
