Ready to show off some #DIYNAFLUOR units to QLD members of parliament and industry representatives tomorrow evening. The dinosaurs are there for moral support. π π¦π§¬

Really looking forward to #CitSciOz25 next week!
I'll be speaking about the #DIYNAFLUOR and some of the outreach programs myself, and others have run using the platform. π¦π§¬π§ͺ
I'll also have a few DIYNAFLUOR kits with me if anyone is interested in building one.

A fun little article on the open-source #DIYNAFLUOR DNA Fluorometer and its utility for limited resource researchers on the UQ News page. π¦π§¬

A small update for the #DIYNAFLUOR project:
We have just released a Mac version of the DIYNAFLUOR software. π¦π
This may be particularly useful for those wanting to QC MinION library preps that are being run on M1-4 Macbooks.
Find the new release on our Git page: github.com/traulab/DIYN...
A really nice write-up from the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, on my #DIYNAFLUOR project - an open-source, 3D printable fluorometer for DNA quantitation. π§¬π¦

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to work with visiting grade 10 students from Kingaroy SHS to build #DIYNAFLUOR units as a part of a larger UQ outreach program run by Prof. Kristofer Thurechtβs group at the CAI. π¦π§ͺ #stem
Absolutely fantastic evening assembling 9 #DIYNAFLUOR kits for a high school research program where students will build and use them to quantify fluorescent nanoparticles and DNA. Massive shoutout to co-authors Sophie and Fiach who gave their time to help! π¦π§¬π§ͺ
Iβve got a class of high school students coming to build 10 #DIYNAFLUOR units in early June.
Thatβs about 700 individual components I have to sort into build kits.
No stress, right? π

Turns out itβs easy (and cheap) to get PCR-amplifiable DNA from Dinosaur Chicken Nuggets using ATL Buffer-Proteinase K lysis + magnetic beads.
->Working on A dinosaur-themed molecular biology STEM prac to pair with the #DIYNAFLUOR. ππ¦π§¬π§ͺ
(Chickens are basically dinosaurs, right?...)
Yes, this. It's filling gaps of redundancy, just like the #DIYNAFLUOR open-source DNA fluorometer etc.
All the materials for the construction of a #DIYNAFLUOR open-source DNA fluorometer have finally arrived and thanks to the excellent build instructions I could complete the assembly in no time. The first test looks great!
Thanks so much @willaanderson.bsky.social and team! Fantastic work! ππ
Got a silly idea for a #DIYNAFLUOR themed STEM prac....
Extracting and quantifying DNA from Dinosaur Nuggets.
Maybe do a species specific PCR to prove its chicken meat? (They're kinda Dinosaurs!) π

Currently preparing 10 #DIYNAFLUOR kits for grade 10 students to assemble as a part of a science outreach program run by my institute.
They will use the DIYNAFLOUR to quantify fluorescent nanoparticles they get to synthesize.
(Wish I got to do this when I was 15. π

Ever wondered how much DNA is in your chocolate Easter eggs?! π§ͺπ§¬π₯
(Neither had I until this morning. π
)
Here are some #DIYNAFLUOR measurements of DNA extracted from Easter eggs (and one bunny) that I have since consumed.
Happy Easter Everyone!
When I saw this fluorescent green dinosaur at the shops today, it was an instant "must buy". π

The #DIYNAFLUOR name and logo started out as a bit of a joke, but ultimately they have really helped catch peoples attention for our open-source DIY DNA fluorometer project.- tinyurl.com/yfh33dsx

We have a design revision that appears to improve the LoD by ~3.5x, providing quantitation down to 0.16 ng DNA. This should cover v.short nanopore library QC.
Would love any feedback! π§ͺπ§¬π¦β€οΈ
Have an experimental #DIYNAFLUOR design that drives the LED's quite hard (up to 100 mA), so naturally wanted see if LED output intensity degraded with use.
40,000 measurements over 4 days with no major decrease in LED intensity noted, however I did accidentally make a thermometer. π

On Feb 20, Iβll be presenting at the 2nd Australian & New Zealand eDNA Conference in Wellington, NZ, on the #DIYNAFLUOR and its capabilities for QCing nanopore #eDNA library preps. π§ͺπ§¬π¦
