#eDNA data could help implement EU biodiversity-related policies. But the fragmentation across the eDNA digital ecosystem hinders its potential.

For #eDNA to burst into its full potential in biodiversity monitoring, it needs to:
✅Align data standards
✅Use standardised metadata
✅Be integrated into EU environmental strategies

New study finds that #eDNA - a powerful tool for monitoring #aquatic #biodiversity - is being held back by patchy #metadata and poor data standardisation. Authors identify key gaps and call for FAIR, CARE & TRUST principles to unite the field.

🧠 Big idea: a feedback loop 🔁
More recovered genomes → better databases → better future recovery → more discovery
This could reshape metagenomics workflows:
from “assemble → bin → classify”
to “assemble → explore graph → extract genomes”
#eDNA #metagenomics #Biodiversity #Genomics

🚀 The result?
✔️ Full genomes recovered from water samples without culturing
✔️ Species-level identification
✔️ Hidden diversity uncovered
…including a potentially new diatom lineage

NEW PAPER ALERT FROM OUR GROUP! What if you can discover previously hidden microeukaryotic diversity at high taxonomic resolution? OUR LATEST WORK DIVES DEEP INTO eDNA OF EUKARYOTES https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1755-0998.70128
🚀 New paper alert
🙏 Massive shout-out to everyone involved! New collabs and old ones growing stronger.
🔥 Proud moment for the team

We are submitting revisions to #eDNA today, and apparently graphical abstract has become a requirement since our last submission?
🧬 A connected, FAIR and standardised eDNA ecosystem will help translate molecular data into meaningful biodiversity indicators for global environmental policy.

Field Report: Baseline eDNA Mapping of the Sunflower Sea Star across California Madeleine Pacheco, Ashley Kidd, Zachary Gold, Paul Barber, Sarah Gravem | March 2026 Water Sample Collection We conducted eDNA sampling from the CA Channel Islands to the North Coast. Our sites included known historical hotspots, areas of recent confirmed and anecdotal sightings, and representative marine protected areas (MPAs) and adjacent reference sites along the California coast in 2025. Ashley Kidd from Sunflower Star Lab (right) and Dr. Sarah Gravem from CSU San Luis Obispo and Maddie (left). Analysis at NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory We ran a recently validated, highly sensitive, and species-specific eDNA quantitative PCR assay for Pycnopodia helianthoides in March 2026. Lab photos featuring Zack Gold and Han Weinrich. We found Pycnos in California! Automated #eDNA seawater sampler is now active in Ny-Ålesund. This smart buoy system enables real-time monitoring of polar #ecosystems, thanks to automated decontamination and onboard computing. By CNR-INM and @cnr-isp.bsky.social, it's part of the #ITINERIS project (Next Generation EU).
💾 #Biodiversity monitoring doesn’t stop at sampling.
Repositories, metadata, and interoperability are just as critical for turning #eDNA data into long-term knowledge.

Looking for a needle in a haystack? We have been working hard at EcotypeGenetics to develop new eDNA tests for bats and dormice that are super sensitive and specific. Chat to my brilliant colleagues Tom and Issy if you are at the event, or have a look at ecotypegenetics.co.uk #bats #dormice #eDNA
🧬 eDNA has changed how we observe biodiversity — but its real impact depends on how well our data, standards, and infrastructures connect.
Building that connection is a shared effort.
