The corner of a creamy white textured stone external wall takes up the right half of the frame, and the left half shows a typical Venetian street, with grey flagstone paving and a low brick canal wall at the end, lined by terracotta coloured houses dotted with green-shuttered windows, little balconies, and patches of crumbling brick. The scene is deserted, and feels both old and timeless. In the top right corner of the frame, someone has attached a small circular plaque, of very hand-made-looking sort-of mosaic tile - like a traffic warning sign, a bright red circle around a white centre with a black old-fashioned tractor on it. No motor vehicle, let alone a tractor, has ever been down this little street.

All are unlit, apart from a cluster of four just to the left of the centre of the frame, which are vibrantly lit from inside with a warm yellow glow. A vaporetto water bus, fuzzy with motion blur, streaks through the frame from right to left, its passenger cabin a bright fluorescent white, and with a neon red beacon on its roof, reflected also in the ink-black water of the canal. There is a strong juxtaposition between the still, old, warm-looking building, and the modern, moving, cold-coloured vaporetto.

Square cropped black and white photo of a statue of a lion, standing on a flagstone pavement with house fronts, a small bridge, and a stray gondolier who I didn't manage to crop out in the background. The lion is made of beautifully tactile textured bronze, and has a pensive and slightly mournful expression on its face, as if it is disappointed by the world in general. Its head and mane are disproportionately large and almost circular, its feet are close together, and its thin tail emerges from behind with a jaunty little upwards curve in it, which if you squint a bit makes its overall shape look like the letter Q.

Colour photo taken through the window of a vaporetto stop. The foreground focus is on the metal edges dividing the window panes, which are positioned vertically two thirds of the way across the frame, and horizontally just above the bottom of the frame, dividing the image into very unequal quarters. The metal is grey and in shadow, and looks gloomy and grimy. Through the window, and softly out of focus and almost dream-like, is the most quintessentially Venetian scene: the Grand Canal near sunset, palazzi and wooden mooring posts lining either side of the silvery water, the sky above painted pastel yellow with streaks of gentle pinky-grey. Two black gondolas, with their gondolieri standing proudly on the sterns, are processing away down the canal, and despite a vaporetto also being in view, the image feels entirely timeless, as if it could have been painted centuries ago. To my imagination, it's like the window is acting like a time machine, offering us a magic glimpse of an eternal past.

Colour photo looking up at a muted but clear blue sky, with a tiny sliver of a roof at the edge of the lower right corner of the frame. A horizontal flag pole emerges from the right hand side into the centre of the image, from which is hung the banner of San Marco: a golden lion on a red background, with six wide fringes on the flying-end of the flag. However, this particular specimen has clearly seen the harsh effects of some ferocious wind, and the flag has ripped almost all the way along the lines of the fringes, and then been blown and spun round and round the flagpole, so that what remains is a dense scrunched lump of fabric in the middle where the sun glints off the barely-visible wings of the lion, with long tattered ribbons on either side of it, which are dancing in the current breeze.

Colour photo of an exterior house wall, divided into three separate buildings - the left one painted a soft warm red, the middle one made of faded brick, and the one on the right painted a powdery orange - and what I would describe as an abundance, possibly even an excess, of windows, fifteen in all, of all different shapes and sizes. Some windows are rectangular, some square, some horizontal rectangles, some arched; a couple at the top have blue shutters, one has a little window box, one a miniature Juliette balcony; none of them have straight edges, and very few of them are in line with each other. The result is slightly disorientating, like a mad magic glazier has just thrown a bunch of excess stock at the wall and let them land where they may. It feels very emblematic of Venice in its beautiful chaos.

An embodiment of the idea that there is no such thing as a straight line in Venice. Looking up at a terrace balustrade, divided into three parts, with an empty metal flower-box holder on each. The lower part of the balustrade is made of thick turned wood hourglass-shaped supports, and there are higher plain wooden posts dividing the three sections with a horizontal crossbar on top. Every element is at a different angle, the crossbar is broken halfway across, and the whole is leaning inwards, making it look both drunk and dangerous. The sky behind and above is streaked with wispy cloud.

A house wall, made of really small irregular bricks in shades of rust and beige. Points of interest from left to right across the frame: some fronds of dark green plant clinging to the wall; a plastic covered cable run, with a burst of cables coming out of the top of it like a firework; and a square window covered by rusty metal square bars, backed by old green netting. The window has an uneven white marble surround, on the lower panel of which someone has graffitied "+ amore" and a heart, in dark blue paint. In Italian, the word for "plus sign" is "più", which also means "more", so the graffiti is calling for more love, a sentiment which I think we can all agree with.

The wall bit, which is on the left of the frame, is dingy beige metal with a curved top made of shiny silver steel, and has a beige rope curving down its side. The gate is made of the same shiny silver, and runs diagonally across the image down to the lower right hand corner. A sliver of floor is visible underneath, painted in yellow and black diagonal stripes, to indicate "don't stand on this bit". Close to the photographer in the foreground however, there are three points of warm orange light: from an uplight highlighting a stone balcony on the right, and on the left, two wall-lamps under a cafe awning, and directly above it one storey up, from a window bedecked with window boxes and a shadowy drooping flag. The contrast between the warm welcoming pools of light and the cheerless monochrome in the rest of the image makes me think of the heartening glow of campfires in a spooky forest, or a travellers' refuge in a hostile world.

Looking out over the Venetian lagoon on an astonishingly clear day. In the foreground on the right, a traditional three legged navigation post made of dark grey wood, with something that looks like an upturned sink plunger attached to the top of it, which I think is meant to deter perching birds. The lagoon water is an unusual shade of navy blue, and gently rippled. The horizon line is about a quarter of the way up the frame, and is a view of an island with low houses and trees. Behind the island in the far distance, but very clearly visible, the snow capped peaks of the Dolomites rise into the vast blue cloud-flecked sky.

Colour photo looking along the most absurdly uneven old brick wall. The bricks are in various shades of dusty red and terracotta, and almost all of the mortar between them has worn away, leaving them looking like they are precariously balanced on top of each other, held together by nothing more than habit and hope. The edges of the bricks stick out of the vertical plane at various depths and angles like a crumbling surrealist staircase, and in one spot close to the centre of the image, the bricks have given up and fallen away entirely, leaving a little window to the world behind the wall, which reveals an incongruously modern flat and featureless dark grey exterior wall, with the lower edge of a dingy white plastic window frame, and a white industrial-looking streetlight, entirely out of keeping with the mood of the wall. The contrast between old and crumbling but full of personality, and the glimpse into modern and functional but soulless is so stark, that it feels to me like the opening shot of a dystopian sci fi drama.

The columns are supporting an arch, which is made visible by its shadow falling towards the camera. It's a slightly disorientating image, with the empty space under the shadow-arch somehow being the focus, a bit as if it is a portal to another world, which feels warm, and still, and peaceful.

A stone-flagged pavement, next to a wide canal, with a wooden jetty protruding from the left of the frame and an island dense with houses and trees in the background across the water, in early morning light. There is a pile of crumbs on the edge of the pavement, and six sheepish-looking pigeons at a nonchalant distance from it, because a gaggle of a dozen or so seagulls are in the process of descending on it in an angry flapping honking mob. The seagull in the centre of the photo is standing proprietorially on top of the pile of crumbs, wings aggressively up, with its beak fully open mid-honk, screaming at its fellows to keep away. It is a scene of noise and chaos.

The bricks in the wall are a crumbling faded terracotta colour, and the water in front is a clear pale turquoise with some small gentle ripples. On the right of the arch is the edge of another building, marked by a pillar of marble with greenery growing up it, and the corner of a shuttered window covered by bottle-green netting. The whole thing feels very improbable and slightly magical, as if this whole setup was designed for and by tiny elves or water spirits - very emblematic of Venice.

Looking up at the underside of a big spherical thin wire frame, wrapped in strings of fairy lights which look like wheel spokes, against a clear blue sky. This is a Christmas decoration which has yet to be taken down, and with the fairy lights turned off, and the contrast between its inherently seasonal nature and the unseasonably bright sky, it feels to me like a forlorn forgotten beach ball.
