I could not be in better company yestarday during the book launch of #DemocracyUnderStrain. Many friends and colleagues from @kcl-spe.bsky.social and beyond. And very honoured to have Prof Massimo Morelli and Prof Yotam Margalit as guest speakers. Thanks to all!

Very grateful to @lseeuroppblog.bsky.social for their interest my book #DemocracyUnderStrain. The entry also considers contexts beyond the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. What if military assitance from NATO came with political conditionalities? More here blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...
As this precedent spreads, expect lawsuits, disillusioned congregants, and a deeper erosion of trust in institutions. We’re not just blurring the lines, we’re erasing the safeguards. #DemocracyUnderStrain
Very proud of this new publication. My fantastic co-author, Lea Heyne, and I look at how the management of the COVID19 economic shock affected attitudes towards democracy in the same group of countries that had experienced the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. And we found good news! #DemocracyUnderStrain
Democracy Under Strain is available online now (print version out 24 April).
If you're interested in democratic accountability, supranational governance, or the politics of crisis, this book is for you.

The fallout was deep and it affected citizens and existing electoral equilibria.
In countries affected by bailouts, party systems changed significantly. Anti-establishment platforms like Syriza and Podemos surged.
And those effects lasted well beyond the bailouts.

Governing parties had no real choice. Rejecting impositions would have meant breaking commitments which would deteriorate further their economic position. But choosing institutional responsibility came at a cost: Severe electoral losses, especially for parties on the Left.

The book argues bailouts worked as a kind of informational update. After observing the imposition of bailouts, people realized how decisions were made—and how little they could influence them. And? Disillusionment with democracy, and declining trust in institutions. 📉
#DemocracyUnderStrain (7/11)
I don’t focus on how the bailouts originated (there is already very good work on that question 📚).
I focus on what came after:
➡️ Citizen attitudes towards democracy
➡️ Change in party systems
➡️ Electoral fortunes of various parties

The 2010 sovereign debt crisis is a perfect case:
Affected governments accepted financial bailouts imposed by EMU actors. But citizens, and parties, in assisted countries bore the cost—with little say in the matter. How did they react? That’s where the book comes in. #DemocracyUnderStrain (5/11)
In theory, delegating power to supranational bodies can be fine—if countries get something valuable in return. But what if, on certain occasions they're forced by those supranational bodies to implement policies their citizens don’t want? What happens to democracy then? #DemocracyUnderStrain (3/11)
How do democracies respond when national governments delegate key policies to supranational institutions—and lose the ability to respond to the preferences of their own citizens? 🤔
What happens when institutional responsibility clashes with democratic responsiveness? #DemocracyUnderStrain (2/11)
My book Democracy Under Strain is finally out, and I couldn’t be happier. 🥳 It’s been a long, challenging journey—but one that’s shaped me deeply as an academic. Here’s what it’s about 🧵 #DemocracyUnderStrain (1/11)
Very excited to share the cover of my forthcoming book. It is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2025. I really can´t wait to see it and will post a 🧵 with the most relevant findings when it is available. #DemocracyUnderStrain
