A gulf fritillary on a small branch. The butterfly has its wings spread wide open. It is mostly orange. At the top of the outer wings there are two black spots with smaller white spots in the middle. There are also several smaller black spots mi the middle and vertical black stripes on the outer edges. The lower wings have a couple of black spots, a black stripe along the edge with a number of orange spots in the middle of the stripes.

The Gulf Fritillary caterpillar (top) is all orange with black spikes. The Variegated Fritillary caterpillar (bottom) is the same shade as orange with black spikes but has two predominant stripes on its back with alternating patches of white and black colors. They are similar in size.
