Thanks in part to the folks at #DisruptTexts, I’m able to see (and teach) how communities of color work outside of Western individualism to craft narratives that center community and collective healing. I think #Encanto would make a beautiful addition to a Hero’s Journey unit.
Diverse voices were/are always needed in schools.
Folks go through all their years of schooling never witnessing the full humanity of Black, Brown, and queer people and now they’re at school board meetings protesting that this representation is perverse.

My kids just watched the Trevor Noah interview with Jason Reynolds. I asked them what I thought were engaging questions, but they can’t get past the fact that Reynolds is a Black man. They’ve never read a book written by a Black man in school.
