Always a powertul moment to see our doctoral students advance research that provide powerful counternarratives to the "official" mainstream fallacies. In this case, Frederick Smith completed an eloquent study that centered the voices of Black women faculty, staff, and students who are also activists, speaking about their experiences in the academic borderlands. Also exciting was to have my former student and colleague, Dr. Kortney Hernandez serve on Fred's doctoral committee as both colleague and comrade. It was truly a moment that reminded me why I have persisted in this university work for more than 30 years. So, big congratulations to Fred! And, thank yous to Dr. Kortney Hernandez and Dr. Bryant Alexander for their invaluable support of Fred's work.

Eight years ago. 3/26/2018.

With my dissertation committee, two friends (Chaz & Yosuar) in person, and thousands of virtual and ancestral prayers, I defended and passed my doctoral dissertation at Loyola Marymount University in LA. 🎓
