“Two esoteric programming events bubbled up this past week. If you’re not into #computerScience, they may appear irrelevant to you. They’re not. The arcane managed to bring to life our pressing questions about whether #AI can create or is a regurgitation machine.” https://reviews.ofb.biz/sa1401 […]
Two #AI-related events over the past week — the #Chardet licensing controversy and legendary computer scientist #DonKnuth's shock over AI helping discover a theorem for a problem he'd not yet solved — demand a reckoning: precisely how creative is AI? https://reviews.ofb.biz/sa1401

> Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I’d been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6 [...] It seems that I’ll have to revise my opinions about “generative AI” one of these days. What a joy it is to learn not only that […]

@0xabad1dea I can not imagine a world in which the foundational works of #DonaldKnuth ever become irrelevant.
Excerpt from "The TEXBook" by Donald Knuth: Insiders pronounce the X of TEX as a Greek chi, not as an 'x', so that TEXT rhymes with the word bleccchhh. It's the 'ch' sound in Scottish words like "lock" or German words lick "ach"; it's a Spanish 'j' and a Russian 'kh'. When you say it correctly to your computer, the terminal may become slightly moist.
Excerpt from "The TEXBook" by Donald Knuth: Hypens are used for compound words like 'daughter-in-law' and 'X-rated'. En-dashes are used for number ranges like 'pages 13-34', and also in contexts like 'exercise 1.2.6-52'. Em-dashes are used for punctuation in sentences--they are what we ofter call simply dashes. And minus signs are used in formulas.
