Today a walk along the #Rilke Trail, on the cliff edge, overlooking the Bay of #Trieste 🇮🇹. It’s still very early spring here. The air is a bit hazy, yet the views of #Duino castle are always nice.
And there’s a (freight) train on the last photo 😉. This is the Venice to Trieste and Ljubljana line.
The First Elegy For who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels and archangels? And even if one of them did suddenly crush me against his heart, I would dissolve, undone by his more strongly grounded being. For the beautiful is nothing other than the onset of what is terrifying, something we just barely withstand and we're stuck with wonder at how calmly it disdains to destroy us. Every one of the angels is terrifying.
Last night I read the first two #Duino #Elegies in @alfredcorn.bsky.social's translation and I'm in heaven, amazed.
Anybody have a favorite English #translation of #Duino #Elegies by #Rilke that they want to argue in favor of? The only 3 I have looked at are: Sackville-West (looks promising), Snow (looks promising), Mitchell (looks clunky).
