Sickle cell gene therapy frees teen from life of pain Aaron Scott, of Fayetteville, is the first in North Carolina to receive a new FDA-approved therapy which uses the patient's own cells to relieve the pain of sickle cell disease.

WRAL featured a patient at Duke Health who became the first person in NC to receive a new gene therapy for sickle cell disease. The therapy holds promise for some people with the painful blood disorder who meet the qualifications for treatment.
