Artemis II crew take "spectacular" image of Earth Nasa has shared the first high-resolution images of the Earth taken by the Artemis II crew as they head on their trip around the Moon. The mission's commander, Reid Wiseman, took the "spectacular" images, Nasa says, after the crew completed a final engine burn that set them on a trajectory towards our closest celestial neighbour. The first image, called Hello, World, shows the vast expanse of blue that is the Atlantic Ocean, framed by a thin glow of the atmosphere as the Earth eclipses the Sun and green auroras at either pole. The Earth appears to us as upside down, with the western Sahara and Iberian peninsula visible to the left and the eastern portion of South America to the right. Nasa identified the bright planet to the bottom right as Venus. The images were taken after the crew successfully completed a trans-lunar injection burn in the early hours of Friday. The burn took the Orion spacecraft out of Earth orbit as the four astronauts aboard aim to travel the more than 200,000 miles to the Moon. Artemis II is now on a looping path that will carry the crew around the far side of the Moon and back again...

Inge Lehmann and Earth's deepest Secret In this episode of Lost Women of Science Conversations, host Carol Sutton Lewis speaks with science writer Hanne Strager about her biography of Inge Lehmann, the pioneering Danish seismologist who discovered that Earth has a solid inner core. Largely unknown outside scientific circles, Lehmann fundamentally transformed our understanding of what lies at the heart of our planet. She did this in 1936 by identifying anomalies in earthquake waves that others had overlooked. At the time, scientists believed Earth’s core was entirely liquid. Lehmann proposed instead that a solid inner core lay hidden within it—a groundbreaking insight that reshaped geophysics. In revisiting Lehmann’s story, Strager highlights that Lehmann’s legacy is one of resilience and perseverance—proof that early setbacks do not define a person and that brilliance can flourish, even later in life. Scientists finally develop a plan to clean up the massive North Pacific Garbage Patch A new study has found that ten years of dedicated clean up work could remove more than 80 percent of the floating plastic trapped in the North Pacific Garbage Patch. That finding turns the planet’s largest oceanic debris field from a symbol of drift into a problem with a timetable, a price tag, and a

Scientists identify faint, detectable signals emitted by volcanoes before they erupt Researchers have identified a subtle seismic signal emitted by volcanoes before most eruptions occur, marking the moment magma begins breaking through surrounding rock.  The finding reframes the final phase before an eruption as a detectable physical transition rather than a buildup of uncertain warning signs. Low-carb and low-fat diets are not always good for your health, or your waistline Researchers have found that healthy versions of both low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets lower coronary heart disease risk, while unhealthy versions of either increase it. That finding reframes a long-standing dietary divide by showing that food quality, not macronutrient labels, determines cardiovascular outcomes. Decades of diet records Across decades of dietary records and health outcomes, the

Over 180 million years, microbes turned a dead ichthyosaur into an exceptional 3D fossil Scientists have found that microbes inside a dead ichthyosaur, an extinct marine reptile that lived during the age of dinosaurs, actively created the mineral structure that preserved its skeleton in three dimensions. That result reframes fossilization as a process shaped from within the body, not just by the surrounding seafloor environment. Inside the nodule The

Choosing the right time to exercise can be more important than the activity itself Human bodies follow an internal clock that helps regulate energy, hormones, and blood sugar throughout the day. For many reasons, that clock often falls out of sync, which makes diabetes harder to control. Exercise can help, but timing matters. Afternoon and evening workouts appear to improve blood sugar in type 2 diabetes more than morning
