Kuguru at #EEA2024 : Overfishing and population collapse turns the gene pool into a gene puddle, which leads to inbreeding. This makes rare mutations spread throughout what’s left of the population.

(In this case, blacktip reef sharks that are covered in spots!)

Scholl at #EEA2024 : 30 years ago, it was ok for ocean scientists to only talk to other scientists. But now, if we care about conservation, scientists need to speak to the public, to journalists, to advocates, to decisionmakers.

It’s easy to agree to do conservation, but it takes a lot of work to fulfill commitments made and we need to hold feet to the fire.

Today I was so glad to present my last results from the MedBluesGen project about the pop #genomics of blue #shark at the wonderful #EEA2024 that I missed to include the link to the #OA paper! Here it is!

We’re currently watching a montage of videos of Greek fishermen releasing endangered sharks they accidentally caught, and we vote for our favorite video and they win a prize.
