Hoping to be the first to Bluesky from Berlin‘s #eea2024
The #EEA2024 came to an end. It's always nice to disseminate new results from our projects and reunite with old friends and making new ones! An inspiring conference in #Thessaloniki #Greece.
Thanks to Ioannis Giovos and all the iSea team for the organization

Thank you iSea for hosting an incredible #EEA2024 and for the opportunity to present some research findings on the occurrence of mislabelling in Maltese Elasmobranch catches
Thank you to my amazing co-authors and to all the volunteers at SharkLab Malta

Excellent talk by Gibbs Kuguru about the effect of #inbreeding in a Maldivian #population of blacktip #reef #shark at #EEA2024
#elasmo #sharkscience #NatGeo
Kuguru at #EEA2024 : Overfishing and population collapse turns the gene pool into a gene puddle, which leads to inbreeding. This makes rare mutations spread throughout what’s left of the population.
(In this case, blacktip reef sharks that are covered in spots!)
Scholl at #EEA2024 : 30 years ago, it was ok for ocean scientists to only talk to other scientists. But now, if we care about conservation, scientists need to speak to the public, to journalists, to advocates, to decisionmakers.
#SciComm @michaelscholl.bsky.social
Campbell at #EEA2024 : Sharks and rays are a public resource managed by public servants for the public. Make your government work for you!
The last morning of #EEA2024 opens with a panel on outreach related to shark science and conservation! Excited to hear from colleagues based all over Europe on how they do #SciComm !
I don’t have enough signal to post a photo
But you guys I just got the coolest shark thing at the #EEA2024 auction
I’m so excited
I’ll show you when I’m back home in a couple days
Chin at #EEA2024 : Sharks mean different things to different people. A threat to your family, wildlife to protect, food to eat, a culturally significant protector of nature. Frames matter, and they affect the way we approach science and conservation. Conservation is about choices!
Sandbar shark, drink!
#EEA2024
Ali Hood at #EEA2024 : Shark fishing nations report different numbers of sharks that they caught to different international government bodies.
It’s easy to agree to do conservation, but it takes a lot of work to fulfill commitments made and we need to hold feet to the fire.
Good to know that @whysharksmatter.bsky.social is as out of touch with the kids in shark conservation as I am!

It’s conservation and management policy time at the European Elasmobranch Association let’s goooooo! #EEA2024
Ready for my talk at the European Elasmobranch Association conference! #EEA2024

EEA conservation panel
Dr. Rima Jabado at #EEA2024 : “I hear a lot of calls for more data, but we know enough now to push for conservation”
At #EEA2024 Martina Spiga showed us how passive eDNA filtration in longline fishing gears can help us to catch "biodiversity bonus" otherwise invisible... and that's really cool!

Great talk by Giorgio Fedele at #EEA2024 about saving-energy swimming #behaviour of scalloped hammerhead #shark and biological clock of these obligate ram-ventilators
#elasmo #sharkscience
Today I was so glad to present my last results from the MedBluesGen project about the pop #genomics of blue #shark at the wonderful #EEA2024 that I missed to include the link to the #OA paper! Here it is!

Kingma at #EEA2024 has a talk with a similar theme as mine: scientists use conservation policy terms wrong, and it limits how useful and applicable their results can be.
Bousquet at #EEA2024 : “If you want fishermen to listen to you and share data with you, you have to build a relationship and earn their trust. That takes years, but once you get there, it’s the key to long-term productive engagement.”
Kleitou at #EEA2024 : “If we’re telling fishers they need to change what techniques they use or stop fishing in a particular area, the government has a responsibility to support them during that transition”
Kleitou at #EEA2024 : How do you balance the ecological needs of sharks with the socioeconomic needs of fishing communities?
“We can achieve this by working together & incorporating science-based decisionmaking. Fishers must sacrifice to preserve the environment, and be trained in new techniques”
Panel with their title slide
This #EEA2024 panel is moderated by Ali Hood, one of my ocean conservation heroes 🤩
The next session of talks at #EEA2024 are about shark and ray fisheries, bycatch, and socioeconomic considerations.
We’re currently watching a montage of videos of Greek fishermen releasing endangered sharks they accidentally caught, and we vote for our favorite video and they win a prize.
@sharkmourier.bsky.social At #EEA2024 is presenting on a large aggregation of up to 700 sharks, which school together during the day and hunt grouper spawning aggregations at night
