A superb vintage 1950s 60s handmade mixed metals silver bronze and red wood on a dark wood base Mexican modernist La Virgen de Guadalupe wall hanging art by the Emaus workshop of Cuernavaca Mexico also known as Emaus and the Talleres Monasticos. Made entirely by hand using silver and bronze overlaid on a rectangular dark wood base, and the 'face' 'hands' and 'feet' of the figure are carved from redwood. Designed by Ernesto Paulsen Camba (1925-2006) who was a Mexican modernist sculptor/architect/designer, and who provided designs for the Emaus workshop in the 1950s. His architectural and design work was a major part of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, and he was a contemporary of Clara Porset, Van Beuren and Shoemaker, among others. Probably one of the most stunning pieces of religious art that I've seen by Emaus! Measures 10" tall by 4.75" wide by just under 1" thickest point. Has a carved inlet at back for hanging, and still retains original label and price tag as shown. Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare likely one of a kind vintage 1960s handmade sterling silver Mexican modernist Sun God design brooch by the Emaus workshop in Cuernavaca, Mexico also known as the Talleres Monasticos. An irregular roughly circular shape with a ring of irregular pierced sections around the rim in a hammered spiderweb of silver, all centering a round incised Sun God design with central repousse face of the god. The only example of this design that I have seen, and most of their silver jewelry is one of a kind or very few multiples. I'm guessing another one of the designs by Ernesto Paulsen Camba (1925-2006) who was a Mexican modernist sculptor/architect/designer, and who provided designs for the Emaus workshop in the 1950s and 60s. His architectural and design work was a major part of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, and he was a contemporary of Clara Porset, Van Beuren and Shoemaker, among others. Measures about 2-3/8" diameter, and weighs 16.2 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "925" for sterling silver, "Emaus" and the Eagle 3. Excellent vintage condition.

La Virgen de Guadalupe, or Our Lady of Guadalupe, represents a powerful blend of religious devotion and national identity for many Mexicans. She's seen as the patron saint of Mexico and is a symbol of hope, justice, and Mexican identity. Her image, particularly her depiction as a brown-skinned woman, resonates with the indigenous heritage and cultural identity of Mexico.

A monumental vintage 1950s 60s handmade torch-cut fabricated and patinated bronze Mexican modernist brutalist Fish sculpture by the Emaus workshop of Cuernavaca Mexico also known as Emaus and the Talleres Monasticos. A very large hand-fabricated brutalist Fish sculpture patinated black and gold and set on a wood black base as shown. Emaus did primarily religious art, and the non-religious designs are a lot rarer and harder to find, especially those of monumental size like this one. Measures 28.25" tall including the wood base by about 12" from side to side by just under 3" thick. The base measures 5" by 5" square by 3.25" high. Marked at back with an applied plaque as shown, "Emaus". There is some wear and discoloration to the wood base as shown, and this could be easily remedied with a little wood stain if you prefer a pristine look. Otherwise this sculpture is in excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear but no damage or detractors whatsoever.

a RARE and wonderful vintage 1950s handmade one of a kind Mexican modernist Medusa design brooch by the Emaus workshop of Cuernavaca Mexico. They were a force to be reckoned with in Mexican mid century art and craft, but they also made jewelry which is much more rare and hard to find than their wall hangings and sculpture. They were only in existence from about 1950 to 1980, and many of their designs were by important Mexican architects and designers including Ernesto Paulsen Camba (1925-2006) who was a Mexican modernist sculptor, architect, and designer. The legend of Medusa is of course from the Ancient Greeks, and here's a short bit I found online about her:

Medusa, in Greek mythology, the most famous of the monster figures known as Gorgons. She was usually represented as a winged female creature having a head of hair consisting of snakes; unlike the Gorgons, she was sometimes represented as very beautiful. According to legend she was a virgin priestess of Athena who broke her vows by having an affair with the god Poseidon, and Athena cursed her for her betrayal by turning her into the monster of legend. Medusa was the only Gorgon who was mortal; hence her slayer, Perseus, was able to kill her by cutting off her head. From the blood that spurted from her neck sprang Chrysaor and Pegasus, her two sons by Poseidon. The severed head, which had the power of turning into stone all who looked upon it, was given to Athena, who placed it in her shield.

The only example of this brooch that I have seen by Emaus in my 45+ year career! Hand painted ceramic 'face' at center bezel-set in a sterling silver frame and with a halo of writhing applied sterling silver 'snakes' surrounding the face. Such a unique piece, and no doubt a one of a kind! Measures 2.5" by 2", and weighs 21 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Emaus 0.925".
Excellent vintage condition.

a SUPERB vintage 1950s 60s handmade 970 silver and amethyst Mexican modernist brooch designed by Antonio Pineda and made for him by Los Castillo in Taxco. A sculpted dimensional geometric design in high-grade 970 silver with an inset oval amethyst cabochon set off-center! An outstanding design by Antonio Pineda, and made for him by Los Castillo during the labor unrest in Taxco in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Many of the silversmiths in Taxco went on strike for better wages and working conditions, and this unrest hit many of the workshops quite hard including Antonio Pineda. However, he had a longstanding relationship with the Castillo brothers at Los Castillo, and arranged for them to make his designs for a couple of years until the labor conditions improved. Measures 2.75" long by 1-1/4" wide, and weighs a hefty 27 grams total. Marked at back as shown with both Los Castillo marks from the period, as well as the Antonio crown mark, along with "970 Hecho en Mexico" and the Eagle 58.
Excellent vintage condition.

The Emaus workshop in Cuernavaca Mexico was an enterprise run by Benedictine monks from approximately 1950 to 1980.

According to legend, Medusa was originally a beautiful virginal priestess of the goddess Athena who broke her vows by having an affair with the god Poseidon. Athena cursed her by changing her into a winged monster with snakes for hair! Apparently the god Poseidon suffered no consequences for his part in the affair. So little has changed in the thousands of years since...

The brooch measures about 2" by 2", and is marked "Emaus" for the workshop, and "0.925" for sterling silver. No doubt a one of a kind, and such a unique piece!
