EP Review: Big League unveil the anthemic swagger of ‘Windanswagger’ ahead of Australian/New Zealand tour We had the privilege of premiering Big League's single 'Neverlandfill' towards the end of last year and the band has now delivered an EP entitled 'Windanswagger', filled with the pulse quickening delivery we have come to expect. The EP sees new guitarist Yonatan Rotem join the band, adding a nuanced texture to the sound. The amusingly titled opening track 'Why Don't Birds Suddenly Appear?' references of course the old Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic 'Close To You' (perfected in delivery by Dusty Springfield not The Carpenters in my opinion).

EP Review: The Night Packers’ ‘Invisible Ink’ shines with a pop sensibility and a wry humour. The Night Packers are literally one of those The Marrickville Sound bands I always go on about - based around the very same inner city suburb of Sydney and still creating an enormously satisfying brand of jingle jangle indie pop after a few years in the industry. They have today released their new EP 'Invisible Ink', a little over two years since 'Loose Carry' (see my review here) and it's business as usual for this creative unit. Opening track 'Death Spiral' is a sprightly punk pop sonic missile with charging guitars and singer David Wilks urgent yelping voice.

EP Review: Sam McMeekin unveils her stunning pop collection ‘Amelioration’, heralding a bright future. 'Amelioration' is Lutruwita/Tasmanian artist Sam McMeekin's second release following her debut EP 'Tempest' released last year, and it portends an important new artist from the Apple Isle. While the release has ten tracks, which would normally be labelled as an album, McMeekin says it is intended to be an EP as it is not a cohesive whole and has a variety of sounds. Indeed there is a mix of alt country and indie pop throughout, providing an element of progression and development in style. The album was apparently written after a particularly intense relationship breakdown, and this seems to certainly seep through the lyrics and delivery throughout the album, which has a heartbreaking elegant beauty about it.

Sydney-raised, Tokyo-based artist Joey Sachi has caught our attention with a series of mesmerising singles released over the last few years, including honouring us with the premiere of her debut single 'Fractured' back in 2023. She has now collected two of these singles in an EP entitled 'Rise' with additional unheard material, and, continuing to work with producer AKINAT, the result is something quite special. Sachi says of opening track 'circuits': The mantra throughout was… ‘it’s not that deep.’ As a sensitive girl this was no mean feat. I really drilled it into every creative decision though…to put it simply I wanted to have ‘fun’ writing this one!

EP Review: Kat Greta collects her glorious singles into a shimmering EP aptly entitled ‘Rhythm & Reverie’. Kat Greta has been blinding us here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia with her brand of luminescent pop that seems to emit rays of sunshine and joy with every note. Greta's background in percussion permeates every note, adding a frisson to the sound and a beat that is irrepressible. After releasing a series of single over the past year, Greta has released an EP aptly entitled 'Rhythm & Reverie' which gathers together the sparkles in one basket and adds one extra poignant track. The resultant package is augmented by its constituent parts.
