This slide includes Molly on the Moon because it’s written by @maryrobinettekowal.com, a favourite author (of adult books, such as the Lady Astronaut series). I’d wanted to get this for children in my life, but found & read it in Minneapolis Central Library, during my #ESIcon24 Conference trip.
Actually, this isn’t true - I did book an extra night when going to #ESIcon24, but that was due to international travel - and really valuable for preparation. Hence repeating the experience.
I wrote about 1 conference yesterday #ESIcon24. The other this year was #CILIPconf24. Being the 2nd year I attended this, I was able to interact with more confidence, & gained from many sessions. Also, while I enjoy presenting, it was a nice reprieve to just take things in #ResearchAdvent #Day4
As something I enjoyed & valued this year, I’m going to pick travelling to the US to go to #ESIcon24, presenting about my #systematicreview teaching, research and learning dissemination, learning from others, and getting to explore Minneapolis #ResearchAdvent #Day3
This seems like a reasonable time to share my pre-recording of the presentation I did at #ESIcon24 in April (link has been up online for a while, but I didn’t promote it as we needed to get our protocol and revision published). I think my experience has progressed a lot since when I presented though
Since #LESSS2024 and #ESIcon24 dragged me back onto social media, maybe I should plug my most recent blog post discussing how we got to the terminology of Advanced Reviews for our ES support at UNL libraries

The last time I was preparing for a presentation(s), for #ESIcon24, I was in a hotel room with no-one to think about but myself. Now, as I try and do a run through of my #cpd25 presentation for tomorrow, I’m very aware of the potential for my children being home from school any minute!
My #ESIcon24 presentation ‘Finally working on a systematic review – building experience in a review about open access publications’. This was my pre-recording.
Having just scrolled down someone’s feed for quite a while to find a link to their recent blog post, I’ve decided I’m going to get the courage to put multiple links to mine a bit more regularly (hope we get pinned posts here at some point!).
This is my recent post about my US adventure #ESIcon24
I do think tins of mints are such a clever conference freebie. I keep thinking of Covidence each time I get a mint out of my bag #ESIcon24
It's the final day of my amazing trip to Minneapolis for the Evidence Synthesis Institute, and I have written up some of my experiences in a new blog post researcherlibrarian.wordpress.com/2024/04/22/e... This includes listening, presenting and exploring the Twin Cities post conference #ESIcon24
Book: Agent to the Stars, by John Scalzi, on a green sofa
I’ve finished the book I took with me to Minneapolis! (I was good & only brought 1 print book with me). Due to conference prep, conferencing & visiting with friends, most of this has been read on my last day, this evening, over yummy wine & food at a place I discovered by chance (Milly’s) #ESIcon24
I’m several days post-conference & still on my Minneapolis holiday! Am aware I’ll be back to all the child related activities (which I will love), & work, in a day & a bit & am making the most of the time to myself. Still feeling tired, tho that’s more from ongoing jet lag than conference #ESIcon24
Omg I'm so tired after #Esicon24. Kind of jealous of those getting to nap on their plane rides home. Might need to wear ear plugs to kids' swimming lessons tonight. My eyes and ears need a break. Would a travel neck pillow at swimming lessons be weird? 🙃
Working on plans for sharing the slides, and putting the conference programme and abstracts in a secure repository (issue with long term access to grey lit…!) #ESIcon24
They’d like to repeat conference like this in the future #ESIcon24
There is an Asynchronous online course coming soon. Working with the Open Learning Initiative #ESIcon24
Materials are open, available to use for regional training. #ESIcon24 I have dreams here UK evidence synthesis people…
This is the end of their IMLS funding. Two institutes planned for the next year funded by the University of Minnesota. Next? Seeking something. Constantly more people applying. There is still a need. #ESIcon24
Now at the end of an amazing #ESIcon24 @amylibrarian.bsky.social is giving closing remarks. Thanking sponsors, attendees, presenters, questioners. In person and online. ESI conference planners and past instructors. Collaboration. Different skills and areas of expertise.
Question. Q1. Re projects with problematic terminology. Is this more of a problem with change over time, or otherwise. Can be a situation of English not being people’s first language, but also what is the norm in different countries #ESIcon24 Nobody can know everything, we learn from each other
Are you a research partner or a research service? Danger if you call yourself a service, people in your university will think you’re there to serve them. ‘Librarians work with partners on…’ #ESIcon24
Michigan use Airtable to track their systematic review projects. How much time spent on it. A lot! #ESIcon24
The individual and the organisation. Different people are at difference stages about where they need to pull back, what they prioritise #ESIcon24
Essentialism (book by Greg Mckeown). Where can you have the most impact. Take time to explore the options. Good chapter on saying No…! #ESIcon24
Change. What do we start doing? What should we stop doing/pull back? Are evidence synthesis projects taking over your library and your life?! #ESIcon24 Yes…
Ensuring that you use a range of alternative words, including antiquated terminology, which may be inappropriate now. #ESIcon24 Also to account for norms in different cultures and countries. The terms Whitney describes as antiquated seem kind of standard to me, from the U.K!
Pictures from bake off with analogy to systematic reviews. Great cake and one that’s flopped.
The cake analogy works with systematic review, as well as Generative AI @woodsiegirl.bsky.social #ESIcon24 #LILAC24
What are the pain points? What do I wish I knew to start with? What slows me done? What issues are unique to my field? (Definitely examples in business…) What solutions have I/we come up with? #ESIcon24
Book: Better, by Atul Gawande. Examples of What Continued Excellence requires
Recommendation of one of Whitney’s favourite books (I am a big fan of Atul Gawande too) Talking about how to do better. I remember the Cystic Fibrosis centre example - need to reread though #ESIcon24 How do you creatively find ways to make things easier for yourself and others?
