Flyer: Education and Training in Optics and Photonics, 19-22 May 2025, Glasgow, Scotland.

Workshop Title: Problem-Based Learning: Engaging Students in the STEM Classroom with Examples from Optics/Photonics
Tuesday May 20, 3:15-5:15, Alloway Suite

Text: Educating Students for 21st Century Jobs
In this workshop, you'll learn about problem-based learning (PBL) by
engaging in a case study on semiconductor waveguide design and
discover how the PBL Challenges have been used to excite students about STEM in the classroom and extracurricular activities.

After this workshop you will
• Be able to use PBL to enhance student critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Have access to the PBL curriculum materials provided through the PBL projects of the New England Board of Higher Education.
• Be invited to join a community of PBL practitioners

Presenters:
Judy Donnelly, Professor Emerita – Laser and Fiber Optic Technology, Three Rivers Community College, CT, USA
Dr. Nicholas Massa, Professor/Chair – Laser Optics Technology (Retired), Springfield Technical Community College, USA

Photos are of students using PBL tools to solve a problem. PBL Projects and NSF logos appear at bottom right.

We're excited to be selected as #ETOP Change Champions! Stop by our workshop and learn how to step aside (hard for teachers, I know as a control freak myself) and let students, well, figure things out. Can your team design an effective waveguide for a methane sensor? 🧪💡
