The Salvation Army benefited from a Victorian roller #disco craze. ‘Rinkomania’ saw 50 roller-rinks open in London alone in the 1870s. By 1886 more than 20 former 'rinks' had been taken over as Salvation Army halls and this one, in Cardiff, even became a women's hostel

Does anyone else have a glitterball in the Searchroom?!! This one watches over us in our new home at Chingford Assembly Hall!

An excerpt from an old handwritten book, a modernised version of which reads: ‘…my father pleased to order me, as: the French language, writing and speaking the same; singing, dancing, playing on the lute and theorbo’.

There are no discos in Thornton’s books. But, as a young girl in Dublin, she learned ‘singing, dancing, playing on the lute and theorbo’, which was befitting for a woman of her status. Sadly there are no further accounts of Thornton putting these skills into practice! #EYADisco #EarlyModern 🗃️ 📜

In the papers of the Rev John Owen of Derby is a lovely handwritten invitation to a quadrille party at Brierley Hall in 1860. A fashionable lively dance, the quadrille is danced in squares of four couples. The late 18th-19th century version of a disco?

For #EYADisco we have an advert for the Al Mansour Melia Disco Club in Baghdad. According to the advert, it was “the most unusual disco club” in Baghdad and surely the best place to hear the hottest “international hit parades” 💃🎶
