Quote from the first page of the pamphlet: "When the Irish Volunteers raised the banner of freedom in Easter Week, 1916, and took over many public buildings in the name of the Irish Republic, it was not only grown-up men and women who answered the call to arms. Young boys, little more than children, cheerfully offered their services and their lives in the sacred cause.

Two of these boys, Sean Heuston and Con Colbert were executed as leaders, while Jack Healy, Sean Howard, Gerald Keogh, Fred Ryan, James Fox, and Brendan Donnellan were killed in the fight."

In 1909 the Salvation Army Limelight Department, an Australian film studio in Melbourne, made #Heroes of the Cross. Its more famous 1900 predecessor, Soldiers of the Cross is sometimes called the world's first feature film. It wasn't, as it was more like a multimedia experience.

Medical history often focuses on great individuals, but there are so many unsung #heroes whose work is essential, yet often overshadowed. We catalogued our #HistNursing collections last year funded by #ArchivesRevealed - they're a treasure trove of #nursing heroes

A hero of #SirJohnFranklin’s 1st Arctic land expedition was Akaitcho. He was a Chipewyan chief who acted as a guide. After leaving Franklin and his men to explore further north, he later returned, as promised, just in time to save the survivors from starvation.

A hero who came through for Thornton time & again was servant & friend Daphne. She prayed with Thornton’s family at their deathbeds, breastfed her babies, & helped her after her husband’s death. Read more in @hagenilda.bsky.social's blog: thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/blog/2...

Not all heroes wear capes…but in this case, they definitely do! Nurse capes are iconic pieces of attire & we have nearly 30 capes in our collections. You can often tell where a nurse trained or worked by the style of their caps & capes

An archivist sits at a table, writing on an acid-free folder with a pencil. Next to her on the table is an acid-free box, a roll of unbleached cotton tape and a pot of brass paperclips. A very happy-looking person pops up behind the archivist holding a box of 'Heroes' chocolates. In the background are library rolling stacks.
