This is the pontoon where one used to board the ferry at Eastney, Portsmouth, to cross the fast-flowing waters to Hayling Island. I sat on the beach in 1994 to paint this and I remember a goat was tethered nearby. It's unlikely that we will visit Portsmouth again but this was particularly memorable because the coxswain of the boat was my uncle Bobby Baker, one of my father's brothers. He was a lovely, good-humoured man, ex-naval. We had a chat with him but I think that was on an earlier occasion when we bought tickets and went over to the island.

My watercolour from 1994 painted sitting on Eastney beach, Portsmouth. I love the memory that it captures. This pontoon is where one boarded the little ferry that my uncle Bobby skilfully guided across to Hayling Island through the fast flowing water. See alt text.

Two paintings of mine from the 1970s showing coastal plants growing on Eastney beach (still have these). I think they show the influence of Graham Sutherland who was a favourite artist of mine.

We're standing on a shingle beach, facing away from the sea and looking up a slight rise of small pebbled ground that also slopes upwards slightly from left to right. Over the gentle ridge of beach there are the tops of bushes just visible before a vibrant sky of blue fills the upper two thirds of the scene. White clouds, shadowed underneath slightly menacingly, gather on the right. On the beach in front of us to the left there is a metal pole erected. It's connected to a small, pill-shaped block of concrete. The pole is painted yellow but near the bottom this has faded to a rough, pale, neutral colour before a band of rust forms where the pole meets a metal plate on the concrete. On the top of the pole an X is formed from metal bars and these are completely rusted. The warm tones of the orange-red rust and yellow pole contrast nicely with the deep blue of the sky on this warm day.

This is Eastney beach, Portsmouth, close to the nudist area (for the brave) and also very near where the Jon Pertwee-era Doctor Who episodes of The Sea Devils were filmed at a former Navy […]

Portsmouth dog beach ban to remain as council fears 'tensions' Portsmouth City Council decides to reduce the dog exclusion zone on Southsea Beach.

It's good news that they've extended the area for dog walking in the summer, but the council really wimped out of removing restrictions in the early morning. There's hardly anyone around at 6:30-7:30. Better to enforce it later. #southsea #eastney #portsmouth #dogs
