Day 31: Advice for new editors

My advice: Network/build a community, learn as much as you can about books & editing, and have patience. Don't give up!

It took me a long time (over a year) to get my first clients. Good things take time. You can do it!

For the final day of the #EditorsTeaClubCommunity, we’ve been asked to share the advice we would give to a new editor just starting out.

I’m asked about this quite a bit, so I have two posts I share with folks who come to me wanting to develop their skills or to actual form their business. ⬇️

My favorite hobbies are business expenses because those are my clients and I have to know the current trends.

2021 me was terrified to take the step into fulltime freelance but 2025 me is happy to be here. Cheers and may you have a spooky fun Halloween!

Maybe it’s time to fix that.

29. Share a moment when you felt truly supported by an editing community.

Shoutout to #EditorsTeaClub and #RevPit. Freelancing can be isolating, and I was delighted to discover these online spaces where I can meet other editors, ask questions, and feel at home.

#EditorsTeaClubCommunity Day 29: Share a moment I felt supported by an editing community

As a newer editor, the editing community has been so welcoming and helpful. When I struggle to get clients or don't know what to do, many amazing editors are there for me.

Thank you! 💜

Biggest catch-up post yet but I was on vacation in beautiful Vermont (all photos were taken by me).

Day 23: What is a small editorial win that you are proud of? I love it most when I can help the author tie up a loose end or tweak a sentence so it sings.

I confessed all of this to the #EditorsTeaClubCommunity, which I had been neglecting, and had folks I barely knew surround me with love, offers to check in, kind words. These were just black and white messages on a screen, but I felt a little less alone. I can’t say that I suddenly became . . . ⬇️

#EditorsTeaClubCommunity Day 28: What stories align with my values?

Stories that center around humanity. They make me feel or think about something. They have themes of empathy and compassion.

I want to edit human stories. No generative AI/LLMs.

We’re nearing the end!

Day 28 of the #EditorsTeaClubCommunity social challenge asks: What kind of stories feel most aligned with your values?

My values include authenticity. Honesty. Learning. Community. Communication. Care. Dedication.

It should be no surprise then that I am . . .

Ones that celebrate diversity. I especially want to see disability rep. I also love to see thoughtful explorations of ecological themes and social justice.

Editors Tea Club Community social media prompt list. Today is October 27th: What's one editing myth you'd love to bust?

No ghostbusting 👻 just mythbusting!

There's a myth that editors will change your voice or take over the story.

A good editor won't change your voice/story, but enhance it instead, with suggestions or simple but effective changes to the sentences.

What is my go-to snack or drink while editing?

Coffee! ☕ I don't usually eat while editing (distracting) but when I do it's dark chocolate 🍫

There's a clear theme here 😅 I'm an unmedicated ADHDer so I use a lot of daily caffeine to help me focus.

Today’s #EditorsTeaClubCommunity question asks our go-to snack or drink while editing. My go-to drink is definitely tea. (Anyone want go guess how I wound up in the editor’s TEA club?)

But snacks will vary, though they’re rarely healthy. ⬇️

24. What does being an editor mean to you?

It means helping writers shape something they've poured their hearts and souls into, and I take that seriously. It means understanding what encourages readers to turn pages. It means loving stories and words.

#EditorsTeaClubCommunity D24

Being an editor means hope for a future I didn't think was possible 🥺

Being an editor means passing on that hope to my clients. Hope that their books, their dreams, will be written, polished, and published.

I'm here to help dreams come true!

. . . those messages are of strength, empathy, change. Their characters are fighters. They challenge and defy, support and care, grow. They are voices that we need, and I get to help make those voices heard.

All on my terms.

I celebrate all wins no matter how small 🎉 Sometimes this just looks like making progress on an editing project during a day when I'm really struggling.

Today I got some pages line edited even though the last part of my day was rough. Any progress is good!

#EditorsTeaClubCommunity Day 22

I don't have a "pie in the sky" project I'd want to edit.

Because all projects I get to work on are my dream projects. I love editing your stories, books, and poems.

Simply having work, helping you, and paying back into the community is enough!
