During WW2 some conscientious objectors faced prison. Sidney Greaves was a Quaker and conscientious objector. After refusing to serve in the armed forces, he was sentenced to six months in Wormwood Scrubs.

NOT JUST MEN: During WW2, roughly 1,000 women applied for CO status.
In WWII, conscription wasn’t only about men. From 1942 it expanded to include unmarried women and childless widows aged 20–30. Around 1,000 women applied for CO status.

Around 20,000 men refused conscription into the British Army during the First World War, doing so for a range of reasons. They faced great hostility and were often portrayed as lazy or cowards. Many were even imprisoned.
