Today was a very dull and drizzly day to pay a long overdue visit Elmley. There were a few raptors visible from the drive but no sign of the Little Owl. I was saddened to hear that the LEO may have been driven off by a visiting photographer trying to startle it into flight. #Elmley

Almost hidden in tussocks of tall grass, a brown hare stretches out in the warm afternoon sunshine. The scene is all quite golden except for the fresh green spring grass. Hares are bigger than rabbits with more angular faces and very long back legs to help them run at high speeds.

A short-eared owl is lit by low winter sun as it flies over the fields of Elmley Nature Reserve, on the Isle of Sheppey, against a backdrop of blue-toned industrial buildings, including recycling and power plants, on the North Kent coast bordering The Swale estuary. The owl almost seems to glow a deep gold.
