On #GoodFriday morning I thought that "St John the Baptist Church" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1932 might be an appropriate image to post. It is in the collection at the Harris Museum, Preston I have also included Elwin's preparatory sketch along with his archive photo of the scene. #ElwinHawthorne

Here's one that I haven't shown for a long time: "The Pillar Box" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1930. Elwin's notes state that the view was taken on "Old Ford Road from Gunmaker's Lane- includes the old Suffragette house" (previously The Gunmaker's Arms, 438 Old Ford Road (until 1915). #ElwinHawthorne

With the week-end nearly upon us, I thought that a seaside view might be appropriate. This is "Broadstairs" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1931. It was on a short-list of two images by him that were under consideration for a Shell poster design: North Foreland Lighthouse was the choice. #ElwinHawthorne

This is one that I've only ever shown here rarely: it is "St Augustin's, Watling Street" by Elwin Hawthorne. It is undated but, judging by the obvious bomb damage, it must have been painted in the period soon after WW2 as one can see in the photo courtesy of Britain from Above. #ElwinHawthorne
