A conversation on global governance AWID FORUM 2024 Because we've been mobilising around the agreed language that is in those UN spaces, we mobilise around the need to hold the line. A line that is invisible to the realities of people, a line that is a line of words, literally, on a document. We focus so much on that language, on that line. And we sometimes miss out on the bigger things that are actually making us be there. Logos: AWID, #EmptyChairsCampaign, SRI

A conversation on global governance AWID FORUM 2024 We're also seeing co-optation of UN spaces by corporate entities, whether in the pursuit of multi-stakeholderism or multilateral negotiations, using SRHR in opposition to economic justice. Human rights are seen as an afterthought. And they're actively being watered down by corporations and corporate accountability as a concept is being hollowed out in itself. A conversation on global governance AWID FORUM 2024 On the question of civil society space being restricted: we also see that quite heavily in the human rights spaces which are supposed to be built on participation, human rights. The higher securitisation, the restrictions, who can come in, who cannot come in, and it is increasing. So we also need to talk about how do we mobilise: the outside needs to be inside, but the inside also needs to be outside. LOGOS: AWID, EmptyChairs Campgaign, SRI

A conversation on global governance AWID FORUM 2024 People are taking the streets to express themselves, connecting the Palestinian struggle with Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Western Sahara, Sudan and Congo, and other struggles, environment, LGBTQ+, and so on and so forth. Because we know that these struggles are interconnected. And I think one of the spaces that we have within the UN and we need to mobilize a bit more is the intersectionality of these struggles together.

A conversation on global governance AWID FORUM 2024 The WTO was set up on the very democratic principle that every country has one vote. So it doesn't matter whether you're a poor country or a rich country, your power will be the same. And it was supposed to work for development, but now it's been nearly 30 years and we see that development definitely has not come from there. And we see that the voices of developing countries and especially marginalised constituencies within them have really been continuously marginalised. LOGOS: AWID, EmptyChairs Campaign, SRI

What’s a feminist like you doing in a place like this? A conversation on global governance This session aims to discuss the multiple crises of multilateralism and possibilities for collective mobilisation and systemic change, with insights from feminists who engage within the system itself. The ability of the international human rights system - and in particular, the multilateral institutions tasked with advancing human rights for all - has long been questioned by feminist and social justice activists. History is littered with examples of tragic failures - from Rwanda in 1994 to Palestine now - the UN has consistently failed to prevent and end genocides. An ecosystem captured by rich Northern states and corporations prioritises elite interests. The system sidelines what it can’t capture or coopt from civil society. An example of this is the system’s favouring rights related to gender and sexuality over rights related to development and the economy. This conversation will bring together people working in varied multilateral spaces and analyse the similarities and differences of dynamics within the WTO, the UN HRC, and CSW, among others. The conversation will also address the way feminist and queer analysis needs to confront cooption in the multilateral system. It will explore the spaces and their entry points, the sites of resistance and the potential for organising for systemic change. Join us for this exciting conversation, which will interrogate where collective advocacy should be headed and the possibilities for feminist collective action and mobilisation.
