In the village rag, someone complained about disabled parking taken up by some of the local weight-loss support group, and made an unkind quip about obesity. This ‘letter to the editor’ was just published! Who knew there are actually people listening to me! #obesityisnotachoice #endweightstigma

“I think the humanity just gets lost over and over again”: A phenomenological study of the experiences of higher-weight medical students A growing body of research has found weight stigma to independently drive both morbidity and mortality, regardless of actual weight. This has, however, yet to translate into medical education and prac...

The word obese comes from Latin obēsus meaning “having eaten yourself fat.” It blames bodies and feels offensive. About 80% of body weight is influenced by genetics. Fat bodies are natural. Let’s ditch stigmatizing medical terms and accept fat people! #BoPo #EndWeightStigma #FatPositive #AntiDiet

You have reach. You could challenge harmful beauty standards instead of feeding them. Loving your body doesn’t have to come at the expense of others. If your “self-love” relies on putting fat people down, that’s not self love, that’s bias. Do better. #FatAcceptance #EndWeightStigma #ThinPrivilege

The legality of weight discrimination in Canada: an environmental scan of case law and the limits of Canadian legislation - International Journal for Equity in Health Weight stigma negatively impacts people with higher weights across the lifespan as well as social contexts and can lead to weight discrimination. As weight is not a protected identity in Canadian human rights legislation, it is important to better understand how weight discrimination is being argued in Canada’s legal system. The purpose of this environmental scan was to examine and describe Canadian case law and scholarly articles pertaining to the argumentation of weight discrimination in Canada. A three-step search process was taken to identify relevant cases and articles that included; (1) Boolean keyword searches in HeinOnline, WestLaw, and LexisPlus; (2) citation searching within all results that met inclusion criteria; and (3) a keyword search in CanLII. These searches yielded a total of 33 documents that were included for analysis, including 8 scholarly articles and 25 cases. Scholarly articles highlighted consistent criticisms of existing human rights protections for higher-weight people in Canada, mostly pertaining to Limitations of disability protections. Of the 25 cases included, 16 were unsuccessful and 9 were successful, with most cases related to employment (n = 19). Our findings point to significant gaps in Canada’s legal system for identifying and correcting instances of weight discrimination. Current Canadian disability protections are inadequate for those who experience weight discrimination, especially those who do not experience disability due to their weight. Our results highlight that weight ought to be a bona fide human rights issue, independent from disability protections.

‘I lost so much weight, my husband thought I was terminally ill’: why do people lie about taking Ozempic? The dramatic results of weight-loss drugs often come with a side order of stigma, as though it’s ‘cheating’ not to stick to willpower, diet and exercise alone. Is that why so many are telling no one –...

It is a damning indictment of society’s view of body weight that those with obesity feel shame in using effective medication #endweightstigma #obesityisnotachoice www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

9/11 The big takeaway? We need more empathy and less judgment in discussions about weight. Blaming parents for children's weight is often misguided and oversimplified. #EndWeightStigma

Weight loss drugs expose women to society's harsh judgements on their bodies Women who have quickly lost weight say strangers are now more likely to smile at them or strike up a conversation.

These new obesity drugs work so well, that people physically change dramatically & quickly in the eyes of others. I found this piece interesting, as an indictment into society’s view on larger people #obesityisnotachoice #endweightstigma www.bbc.com/news/article...

Eli Lilly & other pharma companies in this area (including Novo who paved the way) care about profit. While they all have a veneer of caring about & ending weight stigma, they in fact reinforce/amplify it through other practices (or even in anti-stigma campaigns!)
