Today's #MomentofTranquility: Beautiful Fountains Abbey. Founded in 1132 by a group of monks that wanted to get away from it all (all being busy York life), today it's one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.

Today's #MomentofTranquility: Dover Castle. This huge imposing fortress sits atop the Cliffs of Dover and has kept watch since the 11th Century. From its medieval keep to its once secret World War II tunnels, it remains one of my #HappyPlaces.

The cross shaped keep of Warkworth Castle stands tall under a cloudy sky in this black and white picture. The only colour is the red of the English Heritage flag flying atop the keep.

One of my favourite castles. I can, and did, spend hours exploring Warkworth Castle. Another spot to return to someday... after I've seen all the other spots.

Looking down from the top of the keep. The original Roman outer walls are visible, along with some interior stone building walls. The medieval church is in the upper right and various small boats dot the harbour.

The impressive remains of Portchester Castle. Its 12th Century keep stands 100 feet high and lies within the best preserved Roman fort in Northern Europe. Roman, Norman, and English history in one spot.
