Just going dark here and it must be way past time for the #DailyDaffodil. How about this stunning little bloom growing outside the village pub? Opening time for the pub but closing time for the Daffs.

I'd really stopped to enjoy the Coddington Parish Room next to the church, with its lovely cast iron windows and red phone box, and walk to the Bronze Age burial mound in the field opposite, but the churchyard next door with its crocus carpet was irresistible.

Well, we had at least eight hours of sun today and this is how it ended just now after a glorious sunrise at around 8.30am.

Redacted for Biscuits On lost pages, polite rebellions, and the mercies that smudge.

In Lower Tissington, scandal travels faster than tea cools.
One dropped page, three unsigned notes, and a biscuit tin full of plausible deniability.

Sometimes I spend too much time scrolling, watching the world go to Hell in a turbo-charged handcart and not taking time out. Today I sat in the front garden and emptied a large flower pot accompanied by an inquisitive Robin and watched a rider go past on a horse. The sun shone.

We were just admiring this chestnut tree on the morning walk when there was a sudden warbling sound that we didn’t recognise. Luckily the phone has an app. It was a Green Woodpecker. Unluckily it wasn’t visible just very audible.

The first day of May and the hedgerows are already zinging with the white blossom of the hawthorn, which unlike the blackthorn, always arrives after the leaves and usually flowers fully this month to give it its common name.

We can now walk safely across this field over the way from our home because there has been little rain for weeks and so the neighbours haven’t turned it into a muddy mess with their hooves. Today they are wearing their summer coats. No flies on them.

A garden path is flanked by two brick gateposts and around each two azalea bushes peek out to the pavement, one bright scarlet on the right, the other a more delicate pink on the left. Some steps lead up towards the house. The house name is picked out in ironwork on the left pillar, which is partly covered by light green ivy.

Robin of the day is this little chap who perches on a neighbour’s tree and keeps up his trilling from dawn to way beyond dusk. On clear blue days, such as those we have been experiencing lately, it lifts the heart even in these grim times.

There is always a robin at the corner of Church Way and yesterday there were several, joining in a kind of call and response chorus as we passed by in the late February sunshine. Spring must surely be around the corner. *Sound on.

I always look up as well as down on my walks around our village. Often I spot a bird of prey swooping low, seeking prey in the fields and hedgerows. Within the past 10 years there has been a huge increase in the population of the lovely red kite.
