Fall of the House of Poe (scene/song)
ACT ONE FINALE! It's Eddy & Virginia's wedding anniversary. Their guests are Charles Dickens and Rufus Griswold. Virginia has decided to surprise Eddy with an aria from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." Death visits the party and makes a deal with Eddy, which will come back to haunt him later in the show. I lifted musical motifs from Donizetti for Virginia's vocals, then wrote original sections for Eddy and Maria. I chose this opera because in the story, Lucia is in love with a man named Edgardo of Ravenswood.
You'll catch a few references to "Fall of the House of Usher," which obviously inspired the title of this song. The end of the video is a bit strange because the amateur lighting guy totally screwed up the cues so the audience was confused and didn't even know to applaud. And the actor playing Poe was screaming like a girl which was impossible to edit out without also losing the piano. It is what it is. In a full professional production with a larger cast, I know what this scene is capable of being.
#FalloftheHouseofPoe, I used Donizetti's aria from Lucia diLammermoor because in the opera she's in love with Edgardo of Ravenswood. I added original material for Edgar & Maria to prepare for the end of Act One. #POEthemusical 🪦 The song begins at 5:48.
