Julie gave me lots of freedom to depict Willowdean but only asked to have her in the iconic pose based on the original cover. I knew just the version of Willowdean and scene I wanted to illustrate. One of my favorite moments in the story is where she performs her magic and enchants the crowd in the talent portion of the pageant. I wanted to depict Willowdean in her rhinestone outfit, a glitter butterfly in her hair (a nod to her love of Dolly Parton) as she performs to “Here You Come Again” (a #1 personal fave of mine), throwing streamers and confetti into the crowd. If you haven’t read DUMPLIN’, do yourself a favor and READ it. It will tug on your heart strings. It was a game changer for body positivity and trailblazing in its positive depiction of a fat main character in a book. It was even made into a film starring @jenniferaniston and @daniellemacdonald, with music by @dollyparton herself.

It was such an honor to be asked by the brilliant author @andimjulie.bsky.social to create artwork for her 10th Anniversary of her bestselling book #DUMPLIN’.
