Matthew 21:9 (NKJV): Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Hosanna in the highest!”

The Greek word translated “multitudes” means “a throng (as borne along)”. It has the implication that it is a rabble and could possibly be a riot. I have always found it interesting that this is the verse that we center at the beginning of Holy Week. This scene is not indicative of who Jesus is. Jesus did not come into the world to stir up the crowds. Jesus did not come to be an earthly revolutionary. The people were looking for a political hero who would overthrow the Romans. Jesus did not come to do that. Jesus came to start a revolution of our hearts and minds. Jesus came to overthrow the systems that keep us trapped in our selfishness and hinder us from truly loving other people. Jesus did not come to destroy but to create. Create communities that offer wholeness to those who are broken. Create communities that offer belonging instead of rejection. Create communities that offer something to eat to those who are hungry and clothing to those in need. Jesus did not come to bring about the end of something, but He came to build something based on hope and love. Today, may we allow the love of the Living God flow through our lives, so that we can be co-creators with Christ Jesus in the world.

John 3:17 (NKJV): For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

The Greek word that is translated “might be saved” contains the idea of to protect. It can also mean to heal. Over the years, I have seen lots of people quote verse 16, but they rarely continue on to today’s verse. I remember one of the first times reading through the Bible when I came to this part and realizing that there was more to Jesus than I had been taught. A lot of the times when we stop at verse 16 it because we stop at what we think is the main goal of Jesus’ life: giving us eternal life. Verse 17 tells us that there is more complexity to Jesus than we thought. Jesus did not come to give us some escape plan from this life. Verse 17 tells us that Jesus came to be a part of our lives in the here and now. Jesus came to not just snatch us out of here and up into Heaven. Verse 17 tells us that Jesus came to live with us in the present. Jesus came to be with us down here in the dirt and the hurt. Jesus came not just to heal us, but to heal the world around us. Jesus did not come to sell us insurance. Jesus came to show us that there is a way to live in love and mercy with everyone around us. Jesus came to us that there is a way to live that bring wholeness to us, to those around us and to the whole world. We fix our eyes on Jesus not to get caught staring at the sky, but we fix our eyes on Jesus because He shows us what is true and loving in those in front of us. Jesus comes to show us that love is a path that has to be walked each day in the power of the Holy Spirit. Today, may we learn to focus on the agape love of Jesus and let it lead us to the places that need healing and wholeness.
