Where and how do we find ultimate meaning and purpose?

John 19:30 (NKJV): So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

The Greek word that is translated “gave up” means “to surrender”. It can be said to mean “to yield up” or “to entrust”. In my early years, I found myself in a new neighborhood and isolated from the friends I grew up with. I was already an only child of two only children, so I already knew about being alone at times. This new neighborhood brought that aloneness to another level. So, I learned how to entertain myself. I learned how to be self-sufficient. I learned how to accept being alone. As I grew older, I learned how to isolate myself even more when I felt the need to protect myself. Then, God changed my life and brought a wife and family into my life. I did not really know at the time how little I knew about trusting someone else. I had never had to surrender any part of myself to do anything before. It was a steep learning curve. I say always to bring it to mind that I have no idea what it means to surrender my whole life in such trust and obedience to God. There are days that I am baffled by the agape love of Christ Jesus. There are days that my selfishness wages war against the calling on my life. There are days when faith seems a really odd thing to have. There are days I just want to hide away from everything. Yet, Jesus did not hide. Jesus did not run off to another land to get away from what was happening. Jesus instead trusted in plan that had been in motion since the creation of everything. Jesus obeyed. Today, may we sit with Jesus’ obedience and what is says about who we are to be as people of faith.

Isaiah 53:4 (NKJV): Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

The Hebrew word that is translated “esteemed” means “to weave” or “to fabricate”. There are many different stories that we tell ourselves and others about God that just are not true. Sometimes we do it to gain control of others. Sometimes we do it to gain control of ourselves. Sometimes we do it to gain control over God. We weave tales because we are trying to assert some semblance of power over the world that we live in. Yet, in doing so, we are chasing the wrong power. A lot of the time we are looking for a power that makes us look good. We are looking for a power that puts us up on pedestal in first place. What we are looking for is not the LORD our God. We are looking for a shadow that does not exist. We chase after the broken and flawed. That is not who the LORD our God is. God does not come in the pomp and circumstance with loud noises. God comes in the still quiet times of our lives. When we are down on our knees because grief has taken out our strength, the LORD is there to offer compassion and love. When we have fallen down because of a poor choice, the LORD is there to offer the strength to get up. When we have betrayed what we know is correct, the LORD is there to offer forgiveness and healing. Today is a reminder to quit weaving stories of God that make the LORD fit into the tiny box we want; instead, let us learn to live lives that help others bear the burdens of life. Let us learn to live lives that freely show forgiveness, love and mercy to the glory of the LORD our God.
