Arkle is a #mountain in the Highlands made of Lower #Cambrian quartzite overlying a much older complex of Lewisian #gneiss. Between these #rock layers there is an uncomformity, which is a buried erosional surface that shows #sediment deposition was non-continuous!

2/2 Here is a 2nd photo of the Butte Fault (upturned beds in the middle). The fault with help from erosion created a zone for traveling which was first used by Native people and then by horse rustlers, miners and cowboys. Hence it is also called the “Horsethief Route”. We hiked this route in 2015.

Here is a beautiful kink fold in Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon. It is a sharp angular hinge fold that looks like with a little more compression it could have been a thrust fault.

I studied #geology to understand how mountains formed. It still gets me arm-waving. Check out the dramatic Mitten Park Fault in Dinosaur Nat’l Mon. This thrust fault pushed older rock units over younger ones & happened during the Uinta Mtns uplift.
