Just a beautiful fold!! I hope even non-geologists can appreciate the beauty of what pressure can do to a rock. #FoldFriday #GeoscienceBluesky ⚒️🧪

Arkle is a #mountain in the Highlands made of Lower #Cambrian quartzite overlying a much older complex of Lewisian #gneiss. Between these #rock layers there is an uncomformity, which is a buried erosional surface that shows #sediment deposition was non-continuous!

A photo by Ray Kenny of a ptygmatic fold in a quartz vein. Ptygmatic folds are typically complex and “worm-like,” formed when a competent (stiffer) vein, often of quartz or pegmatite, is deformed within a less competent, more ductile host rock.

Good morning Blueskyers! Here is a cool shot of ptygmatic folds in a quartz vein. Host rock: metamorphic phyllites and schists. ALT text for more info.

Here is a #landscape photo with amazing #geology. Across this lake is a large chevron fold with several normal faults. These meta-sedimentary rocks were compressed by intruding granites during the Mesozoic era.

folded beds in, well, idk what it is. one of the rock types near the south col of the Old Settler. Settler Schist maybe?

We like fold-and-thrust belts, don't we?

Here is a beautiful kink fold in Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon. It is a sharp angular hinge fold that looks like with a little more compression it could have been a thrust fault.

I studied #geology to understand how mountains formed. It still gets me arm-waving. Check out the dramatic Mitten Park Fault in Dinosaur Nat’l Mon. This thrust fault pushed older rock units over younger ones & happened during the Uinta Mtns uplift.

todays #FridayFold on #FoldFriday, a cropped and artificially enhanced view of a neat fold in the limestone near the BC-Yukon border between Whitehorse and Atlin, east-ish of Carcross. you can also find this one on Google Earth if you know where to look, although it doesn't stand out as well

At the bottom of this photo, you can see squiggly/folded lines in the sandstone. This is called soft sediment deformation. It happens during or shortly after deposition & before rock consolidation. Possible causes: density differences when the sand was liquified or seismic activity. #FoldFriday

Hello #foldfriday! Here are beautiful chevron folds in the Maverick Shale in AZ. These chevrons formed during the Mazatzal orogeny (process that builds mountains by compression) ~1.65 Ga. A fun hike to observe these features is the Barnhardt Trail in the Matzatzal #wilderness #appreciatepubliclands

2/2 On the Arctic Circle Trail in #Greenland, the #geology was phenomenal! Here is a fault plane exposing an older folding event. Hot fluids migrated along this fault plane creating rare minerals & gemstones. We found many sapphires along this fault zone.
