A previously unknown collection of 17th century illustrations of #fencers is up for auction (thank M-O Blattlin for the notification). M. Vieillard identified a close similarity with the illustrations from Lovino. Hopefully, the #FFAMHE will be able to get a full digitization;
In #HEMA you tend to get people who want to work things out for themselves and struggle with receiving instruction. While it’s frustrating to watch them slowly reinvent the wheel the best approach is to ensure that the #fencers around them have coherent #fencing to push them in the right direction.
Exploratory #fencers like things like #HEMA book clubs where they can discuss what they’re reading in the sources, source lending libraries, weapon lending libraries at events, and scenario training.
For social #fencers events with the use fencing as an icebreaker, provide a reason to mix who’s interacting, or provide an activity when there’s a lull in conversation are great.
So things like #fencing round robins, defined social spaces to chat and going to the pub after training.
For competitive #fencers tournaments with defined and coherent rules are great.
Tonight I am formally calling for the exclusion of all #LeftHanded #fencers from competition.
The only other acceptable solution is to require that a separate but equal tournament be held for left-handed persons. It is time to end their unfair advantage over the right-handed.🧵
When preparing your crew for a #HEMA tournament remember different #fencers have different reasons for playing. Some are achievement oriented and focused on placing, some are just entering because #fencing fun, and some enter to help recover from the trauma of school sports and overbearing parents.
The only way to absolutely eliminate double hits from #HEMA would be to have a complex and rigid system of actions that all #fencers must be rigorously assimilated into. But more specifically it is one that necessitates authority figures to arbitrate it.
