This Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) is the largest of North American hawks. It has a gray head, rich, rusty (ferruginous) shoulders and legs, and gleaming white underparts. This bird was perched backwards with its head turned forward on a branch with clusters of green needles and brown cones. There's a blurred background of green grass, tall green evergreen trees, and blue sky above. Taken high atop a hill at Jenner Headlands Preserve in Jenner, California.
Today's alt #BirdOfTheDay theme is #RareEncounters -- birds you've captured least. This was my first time seeing a #FerruginousHawk, and the only time I got photos of one! (Jenner, CA - 1/14/21) 🤩🪶🌲
