Walking back from the pub on the last evening of #FieldCourseFortnight, and what should fly past and settle on a tree trunk but a moth. Devon Carpet I believe, only the second I've ever seen (both @FSCBlencathra) #TeamMoth

Scallop Shell moth. Densely marked with wavy lines.

Having run 38 traps at FSC Blencathra this trip, student Zoe finds Moth of the Week this morning on the accommodation kitchen window frame. Scallop Shell, an absolutely stunning insect, and a lifer to boot 😀. #FieldCourseFortnight #TeamMoth

A pleasant wander around FSC Blencathra this morning ahead of the forecast rain. A pair of Red Squirrels were more focused on each other than on me, and then on the Stoat that shot past. The local Spotted Flycatchers were working hard feeding nestlings. #FieldCourseFortnight #UKBirding #LakeDistrict

A couple more NFY from the FSC Blencathra moth traps this morning - Coxcomb Prominent and Clouded-bordered Brindle. Numbers still low unfortunately. #FieldCourseFortnight #TeamMoth

A fluffy fledgling Tawny Owl in a field of green leaves.

A fluffy fledgling Tawny Owl in a field of green leaves.

Maintained our 100% record of finding Tawny Owls
at FSC Blencathra on #FieldCourseFortnight. Blackbirds spooked the adult before I could get a photo, but the fledgling was much more relaxed.

That time of the week when the students take the lead running the #FieldCourseFortnight moth traps. And they came up trumps with an unequivocal Larch Pug, a lifer for me. Small Angle Shades, Brown Rustic and Broom Moth were NFY in a better catch in improved conditions. #TeamMoth

Low numbers again in the London moth trap, but another 3 NFY among 19:13, with Hoary Footman (annual here now), Eudonia lacustrata (by the looks), and Swammerdamia pyrella. Off to the Lake District today as part of #FieldCourseFortnight so hoping for a few more species up there... #TeamMoth

The final night of trapping @FSCBlencathra was the best of the lot, with 46, 56 and 40 species in the three traps. Two more micro lifers in Elachista luticomella and Epiblema scutulana. Green Arches and more Garden Tigers amongst the macro eye candy. #FieldCourseFortnight

Great start to the morning when @fssbirding texted to say he'd found the Tawny Owl chicks. The adult arrived shortly after me with a shrew which it passed to its two well-grown young. #LoveNature #FieldCourseFortnight

Our annual @UCL visit to the summit of Blencathra mountain, and my annual check in on the mountaintop moth Catoptria furcatellus. Also a lifer for me in Ancylis unguicella, and large numbers of Orchid Beetles at the summit. Quite the mini Serengeti up there. #FieldCourseFortnight

The final total from last night @FSCBlencathra was 78 macro-moths of 33 species across 6 traps. Not a huge return, but some nice moths - Devon Carpet was new for me (as was Tansy Plume), Welsh Wave was a trap first, and we caught both Elephants. #FieldCourseFortnight

It must be difficult to please all users, but props to @CityCorpHeath for leaving so much of the grass unmown. Dragonflies, moths, butterflies, flies, wasps, nomad bees, bees – all loving this meadow. #FieldCourseFortnight

While the students were working on trees, I was looking for insects. This is a regular on @CityCorpHeath – Downlooker Snipe-fly, looking down on me. #FieldCourseFortnight
