Finally got around to selecting my favourite films of 2018.

I wrote a brief something about each of them here -

Finally threading together the second part of my pithy comments for the films of 2018. I had high hopes for a lot of these films. Now calling time on 2018, and I will blog about my favourites of the year later this week. #Film2018 1/12

Big up John Waters for the list. A few here completely new to me so I am looking forward to doing some digging. #Film2018

Throwing together a thread of pithy film comments for those films I saw at the end of the year but was too consumed by Christmas food and alcohol to login to twitter and post said pithyness. Part 1 now; part 2 to follow. Maybe. (1/16)

#Shirkers is such an engrossing and bittersweet story. A fascinating look at the artistic process, time, friendship and loss. #Film2018

I am sure #TheMiseducationofCameronPost will find its audience as it is both sincere and engaging - shining an important light on the grotesque practice of gay conversion therapy. It doesn’t shy away from the horrors, while also remaining funny and defiant. #Film2018

I adored #Burning. Ah-In Yoo’s complex performance is incredible; at times naive and vulnerable, at other times guarded and bristling with poisonous insecurity. It features a fascinating score by Mowg and Kyung-pyo Hong’s digital cinematography is gorgeous. #Film2018

Steve McQueen’s #Widows is a very interesting film full of socio-political commentary and intriguing characters. Top acting across the board as well. The actual heist itself, and some of the sub plots though, felt a little underdeveloped. #Film2018

#TheKindergartenTeacher works well as a slow, revealing character study. Maggie Gyllenhaal is always seeking out complex, flawed protagonists, and she is wonderful in this. #Film2018

#ASimpleFavor is fun. The plot barely holds together but the high-concept absurdity is part of its DNA; Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick play-off each other well. #Film2018

For me, #FirstMan is Chazelle's most successful film to date. A painful, melancholic film dealing with grief and loneliness. Linus Sandgren's windscreen photography looked amazing on the big screen. #Film2018

Not quite sure if #TouchMeNot is entirely successful; though, it is an open and interesting look at bodies, and the fears and desires that often stem from them. #Film2018

The more I think about #TheBalladofBusterScruggs, the more I like it. As always, Burwell’s score is phenomenal. I love the ideas in play here, and the execution (most of the time). 'The girl that got rattled' segment was a standout for me. #Film2018

#YoursinSisterhood is simple idea, yet a hugely powerful and enlightening experience. #Film2018

#TheyShallNotGrowOld is an incredible achievement. A crucial documentation of an unimaginable horror. #Film2018

#TheyllLoveMeWhenImDead is a fascinating watch. Amazing to see how Welles was regarded by the industry late in his career. I would have loved a deeper exploration of the relationship between him and cinematographer Gary Graver. #Film2018

Not sure how to fully articulate my thoughts on #TheOtherSideoftheWind yet. I want to dive back in again very soon. Some of those shots though - frequently jaw dropping and often hilarious. #Film2018

#TheChildrenAct is right in the mix for worst film I have seen this year. Ian McEwan’s script is appalling. The central relationship between Thompson and Tucci is utterly bizarre; improbable. It looks so ugly, so televisual too. #Film2018

#Overlord is a real fun romp. It contains plenty of inventive set pieces and strong visual effect work - really enjoyable. #Film2018

As expected, #Incredibles2 has some wonderful animation and interesting ideas. However, it could have been a lot tighter as it loses focus too many times. #Film2018

Bradley Cooper’s #AStarIsBorn sells you a Hollywood template very well indeed, and it is utterly insufferable #Film2018

#SorrytoBotherYou is a fascinating and vibrant debut from Boots Riley - it’s also, undoubtedly, a film for our times. I can’t wait to watch it again. #Film2018

#22July; I appreciated the sincerity and intent of this film much more than I did the actual experience of watching it. #Film2018

I am not sure if #EighthGrade has been picked up by a UK distributer but it deserves to be. I found it honest, hilarious and moving. I am sure this will end up being one of my films of the year. #Film2018

At times, the #HalloweenMovie is too knowing, yet it is made with intelligence, craft and a real affection for the material. This is probably enough to set it apart from a number of other horror films that you will see this year. #Film2018

I am a big fan of Tamara Jenkins’ latest, #PrivateLife. Sharply written, superbly acted, and bittersweet. I hope that we get to see another project from her very soon. #Film2018

Kevin Macdonald’s #Whitney documentary was a little too uncomfortable for my taste. It felt at times like a particular narrative was being forced on the story. Sensationalist would be too strong a word to describe it, but I didn’t find anything insightful in this film. #Film2018

Given the subject matter and style (Isolated Island / religious cult / heavy on the gore), I was surprised by the lack of tension in #Apostle. Perhaps this was due to the lack of characterisation; I became unengaged pretty quickly. #Film2018
