A Scadoxus bud emerges in spring. Here there is a tall stalk and bud, with three other bulbs about to send up stalks. They are in a black flowerpot on a green backdrop.
In full bloom. You can see why it's called 'Fireworks Lily'. Red bloom against a green backdrop. Other leaf shoots are emerging at its base, from the potting mix in the black flower pot.
Broad green leaves sprout after flowering.
The stems have a lovely deep maroon stippled base, fading at the top of the leaf stems. This plant is in a black flowerpot, next to a brown terracotta strawberry planter and a small green flowerpot containing a Dendrobium orchid stem. Green garden backdrop.
Native to east and south Africa #Scadoxus multiflorus (AKA #FireworksLily, Blood Lily, Football Lily, Starfire Lily) are spectacular. Like Hippeastrums/Amaryllis, they send up a thick stalk and bud in spring, then flower before leaves emerge. They are toxic, so avoid if you have pets/small kids.
